Reproduce actual vehicle movement

Post by SgtMalarky »

Right Guys, now I am a veteran tank driver of 4 days, I have observed that my tank accelerates at the rate of an F1 car. Now it could be I am a heavy thumbed operative or it could be something electronic.
Having watched Tiger 131 who does a what a 56 tonner would and that is take a while to get up to any sort of speed, I would like mine to do the same, so my question has a number of options.
1. The first being am I dreaming and what I have is what I get.
2. Is there anything I can do like upgrade my transmitter
3. Am I entering the realms of exponential servos.
4. Or is there another motherboard available
5. Am I looking at a combination of any of the above.

Also my turret has about +/- 7 degrees of free play/backlash, so this needs addressing.

Also as mentioned in a previous section, I have barrel and track recoil, would love to get Reid of track recoil.
My thinking with all this is we replicate the cosmetics so let's go the whole 9 yards and replicate motion as well.
If this is a misguided request of a novice, please feel free to do so, but with an non armour piercing 20mm round! No seriously this forum has been of immense help already and like my tiger 1 I am thick skinned:-)
Question: "how many tanks does one person need?"

If you are prepared to part with some cash, then an Elmod board will give you realistic movement. You have gear change momentum, and any number of whizzy preogramming settings that you can play around to your hearts content. Definately gets rid of that sports car thing, it is impossible to race away from a standstill as there is a delay while the driver puts it into gear, revs the engine, and engages the clutch.

I have to agree with Mr Wibbly the Elmod would give you exactly what you are looking for. Also what gearboxes are you running? My stock metal gearboxes were geared for speed and made my tank accelerate like a dragster. Image

I ordered some nice steel gearboxes (better gear ratio) from Mr Tankbear and now mated to the Clark tk60 it runs very realistically a very dramatic improvement and much quieter!

Hope this helps.
Tanks alot....

As someone recently new to "the game" here's my 2c worth.

As long as the radio is proportional (movement is related to the amount the joystick is moved) then you can drive the tank the way you'd drive a car! By that I mean slow steady progressive movement of the joysticks rather than only using full deflection UP DOWN LEFT RIGHT. Lets face it you don't drive that way IRL, but it is tempting until you get used to the technique. I've pretty much figured out accelerating & turret rotation, but I seem to still have a "Lead Boot" when releasing the joysticks.

I also found the sticks became far more sensitive to small control inputs once I made them a little longer by aiding rubber tips from the local home improvement store.

If you have a programmable radio you can also adjust DR/EXPO and travel adjustment to make sticks less sensitive and also limit
top speeds like in spin or reverse etc.

Another vote for Elmod from me. I have tried a few other boards and while there are some pretty good competitors out there, as far as I know Elmod is the only one that simulates gear changes. As earlier posts have mentioned there isn't much you cant configure with them and the sounds are top notch. In terms of price they are in the same range as the TK60 and the IBU3.

Hi No one has thought about adding weight to the model ,metal tracks wheels suspension , if you want it to look like a full scale model , it needs weight , or you will have it bouncing around when it goes over in even ground. This added to a good board one with momentum, is the best way to get one running correctly.
If you have a Tamiya Tank , they are great runners and very reliable but don't drive at all like a real one.
