Re: Spam reporting
Been out at a tank meet all day, so didn't see the spam or the alert that someone PM'd me. I am close to my pc every day except 1 day a month, and usually jump on it often before anyone else even knows it was there. There isn't a lot that anyone can do about spammers, they will find a way no matter what. There is little that any forum can do to stop them.

Re: Spam reporting
I am sat here watching and clobbering, but need to go to bed as it is almost midnight here in the UK.
Message to all, if you spot anything then PM all of the mods, and hopefully one of us will be able to jump on it as soon as we are able to, it may not be straight away, but at least we can do it as soon as possible. In the meanwhile Matdragon is looking at ways to make it more difficult for them to sign up. The snag is that whichever method is chosen, it makes it more difficult for genuine members to join as well.
We are working on it, and watching the forum, but we do need your help as well, with the best will in the world we cannot sit in front of a pc 24/7, clicking on 'New posts'. As an example I am building and configuring a 3D printer, that means being on around 4-5 different screens at the same time, if something pops up on the forum I may not see it straight away, but if I get an email 'boing' then I will take a quick look to see if it is forum related.

Re: Spam reporting
I would suggest to have mods from all time zones or at least every 6 o'clock so that one mod can deal with spammers from different places while the other mods are sleeping.

Steelbird upto just a few days ago there was Someone in Australia,(Herman) God bless you dear friend),
There is someone in North America (Jackalope),
And in the United Kingdom, (WibblyWobbly),
Herman has just suffered a heart breaking family disaster and his priority's are quite rightly not with this place at the moment although I am certain that all our thoughts are with him and his family,
This does mean that the usual watch is no longer 24 hours a day,Please be patient and the problem will be resolved,
Shaun.

Re: Spam reporting
The 'watch' is back lads................lets clear it up
we all know this place is being hit by dodgy sites, we all know that it cannot always be cleaned up before ":the decent folk" see it, and we all know its a tough gig in the cyber world, so lets just cope with the fact that if you open a thread thats content is not to your moral standard- dont open it to confirm that ok !!
The idea was to have a good spread of volunteers that have the best interests of this place at heart, in different time zones to hopefully head off the underbelly of the cyber world, but its not as easy as it seems.
All we can be thankful for is that most of the deranged new members seem to at least choose to post their bacterial diseases in the "off-topic' section, which, at times, is better than some others do to be honest !!
Due to actual real life(and I would swap my reality for another in a heartbeat) we cant always get the notification, check it, and act accordingly in time to avoid any offence, but for god sake, please do keep letting us Know, we get most of them.
A PM with a link is worth its weight in strip-club discount vouchers..............(well, thats what they offer at times)
but I for one cant always make it to a phone or computer as my employer will run my ass off(thats unemployed for those that are retired) and put me on the bread line..........
That is a spectre I will NOT explain to wife & little children as an option to protect grown ups from, sadly ,a virus as well known as the common cold these days.
This is a computer , it has an 'X' button, and an off button................those easily offended by others debauched minds should seek haven in a land of unicorns and Santa.............
Mr dragon will do what he can, in the mean time, we inform, and cope.
Because trust me, if THIS is the worst life can throw at us- its a win...........

Re: Spam reporting
One thing that I did that sometimes give me an early alert. Firefox has an add on that allows you to have a tab open, and set an automatic refresh on it, any duration you want. I simply open RCTW on new posts and it refreshes away without me doing anything. The only fly in the ointment is that the site auto logs a member off after a while, so although the page is open, I am not logged in, and it doesn't update. I have to be logged in to see new posts.
It's better than nothing though.
