BLACK ARROW/V MARKINGS ON CHALLENGER TANK ?

Hi guys, what are the black arrow/v that is on the challenger tank that points either up, down left or right on the turret and fenders ? also can they be pointing the same way on both sides as some pic I've seen on on side is pointing on way and pointing opposite on the other side.....confused lol Ive tried google but cant get anything up about it !

Unit designators.
I can't recall the code but depending on the direction is the company the tank is in .

Both sides should reflect the tanks unit or you will have half a tank from one company and half from another !
The Abrams and the Israeli forces use similar methods
