The early M4A1's tended to kick up a lot of dust after firing which slowed up the rate of fire as the gunner couldn't see anything for the dust cloud. Later models had threads on the barrel and a cap to protect them for when the muzzle brake was available.

Nice detail added there Frank and that barrel is a lot better looking that the standard Mato version (but I do like the BB feature) ;)
