Calling Northerners

Post by wibblywobbly »

Just on the off chance that I 'may' move northwards, is there anywhere to avoid?? 8O

I know nothing about life up there in the wilds, though I see that some have electricity and running water :S ?? So, is there anywhere that is recommended, I am looking for a quiet life and see places like Glossop, Long Eaton, anywhere around the Peak District etc...but are they good or bad, I haven't got a clue? ???

There is an amazing difference in house prices between down here and up there so I do wonder whether I would be better off moving up there. I just need someone to buy this place, and then I can see what my options are.

If you move "up North" what are we going to do in BAD? Who's going to sort out our tanks when they malfunction? :'( :(

This is all pie in the sky at the moment. The housing market is dead down here, I can't sell mine, and there is nothing much on the market across two counties. If someone does make an offer I may have to accept it, and that means I have to find somewhere to live myself. There are a lot more properties on the market up north and way cheaper than down here, which means that I could take a lower offer down here and buy a better place up there.

There are places down here that I could buy if a decent offer comes in for mine, but what I buy and where I buy depends on what that offer is?

I used to live in France, and a couple of times drove 180 miles to Caen, a 6 hour ferry trip, 100 miles to a tank meet, and then made the return journey. When I think about it, that was an 11 hour trip each way...and yet it took me six and a half hours to drive from Bristol to the Yorkshire Show which is in the same b****y country!

Where do you need to be near to? Peak is a large area so do you want Manchester or Sheffield side?

Oh, and the North starts at the Wall. I'm in the south here...... Much further south & you're in France! :D

I guess that being within travelling distance of Manchester or Grantham would be a bonus, though my daughters and grandchildren are in the Loughborough area. The main consideration is a bit of peace and quiet. My current place is directly under the main flight path for what seems like every aircraft on the planet that start around 5am, has about 5 dogs that bark incessantly (one till midnight and gone), there are two houses planned for the land right next door, the Avon ring road is a stone's throw away and is 'loud', add in the Chav's with their exhausts, the motorcycle speed testers on the ring road, two houses opposite have nine cars between them, every time they slam a door the shockwave goes through every wall, floor and ceiling in my house (that's nine cars x three doors x multiple opening and slamming), the police helicopter that is over the area at low level almost every day at all hours.

..and you can see that if I could buy a shed on a remote Scottish Island I would probably take it! :/

Given MAD are now in Preston (?) you'd want to be NW area for them.
GLAD just needs easy access to M18, A57, A617 or hack through Nottingham; it's a good 90minutes from SW Sheffield (25-30 mins to M1-M18).

I'd avoid Glossop, Buxton, Matlock and Hope Valley if you want quiet. Latter two are nice areas but you'll get tourist traffic. However, heading west of Matlock (Darley Bridge and up) is very nice (driving through - we shoot in Darley Bridge) and less touristy - but easy access to Stanton Moor etc for the dogs.
If you want city nearby then Dore (Sheffield) is pretty quiet, as is Totley (Sheffield) if you get the right streets, both have easy walking access to the Peak.

Bear in mind that the Peak roads are interesting in the winter.....

Hi Rob The Peak District is very nice area , but anywhere inside the National Park the prices are a lot higher than outside it also if you need to get planning permission for any work to a building inside the park area is very restricted. Also take note the A57 through Glossop(this also applies to the main road to Buxton) is one of the first roads to be closed in winter due to snow , so you may have to factor in getting a 4x4 , having said that some nice roads to ride the bike in summer . Housing around Manchester 20 mile radius tends to be higher than the other side of the Peak District somewhere in the M1 A1 corridor tends to be cheaper ex- mining areas very cheap, south of Doncaster very good prices.Your going to have a lot of searching to do hope your house dose sell then you will know how much you have in your budget, only then will you be able to sort out exactly what you need . Best thing to do is once it sells do a road trip and go looking at the areas you might think suit you and see what they have to offer.

regards pete

P.S. if your going to an area check the broadband is good in that area some of the smaller villages and towns have poor broadband
