Reformatting IBU2 sd card

Post by mitchell »

I find that my current version of Windows (8.1) does not format the little 128Mb cards in a way that the IBU2 will accept. Tried formatting the volume as a FAT, FAT32, exFAT and NFTS, So I'm thinking there must be a specific protocal and reformatting software to guarantee success?

Isn't there a thread somewhere?

I thought it was fat I think 128mb might be too big, but Ian will doubtless confirm, probably tomorrow!

Ok so, ran out of options for the 128 cards, i'd get them formatted no problem, then configured the INI the way i wanted it no problem, all values as per the protocal but still no joy.

But, I did get the 4Gb card correctly configured and accepted on FAT.

And, I did get the 16Gb card correctly configured and accepted on FAT32. Used a partition of 4Gb and unallocated the rest, worked 1st time.

I can't seem to get any of my IBU2's 128's to work after they leave my laptop (win 8.1). I've been running 4Gb's for a while going back and forth from tank to laptop without ANY issues though. The higher capacity sd's seem to be a lot more stable and reliable

No difference in the 128mb and 4gb as the file format is the same. So must be the way the computer is saving them, I know Windows will complain it's in fat format because it has less file information compared to others formats but should still allow it to copy after telling Windows to shut up and do it.

It's a carry on Ian I know. Main thing is that doing it that way works for me and I find it reliable. I tend to get so fed up otherwise trying to get it to do what I know it should do,

Afaik, the IBU only accepts card formatted in FAT-16. Bit of a drag to get that done in win8.1. FAT-16 can only use 2 gig max. Bit of a waste if using 4 gig cards.

If You want a go at it, be prepared to go off the deep end, into the 7th Bolgia of windows.. :P

Nicked' from "Tom's Hardware", by popatim:

1. Insert the card into a reader on your computer
2. You'll need to know the driveletter it gets assigned. We'll use E: for this guide (Be. Ab-so-lu-te-ly SURE that is the drive letter that Windows has assigned the card!!!!!!!!!! !!! !!! !!! !!! !!! !!! !!!, You won't be the first that re-formatted his/her disk into oblivion )
3. Click on START
4. Click on RUN
5. Type:

cmd.exe

6. Click OK or press Enter
7. In the black window type FORMAT E: /FS:FAT16 (it could be /fs:fat depends on which version windows you have)

After that, it's FAT16, and should work. There is something odd when trying the FAT-16 format from the explorer. Only in naked DOS does it seem to act like it should in win 8.1

On Win 7 pro it worked from the explorer for me, not so in Win 8.1... I am kinda stumped. And I configure vSphere, ESX's and Dell Compellent stuff for a job... tsch..

(There's a reason that the Manufacturer warns against re-formatting the card that comes with the IBU-2 )
