HL Bulldog or not?

I am considering buying the HL Bulldog for £69 from an on-line supplier to eventually learn new skills on such as upgrading, painting, and weathering etc.
Any comments good or bad would be much appreciated.

Not sure there are many upgrades for the Bulldog. If you want upgrades and a TON of them along with build choices check out a good old Tiger tank or Sherman. Both have almost limitless upgrades and versions to choose from.

The stug is a good one for upgrades too. esp if you want to try getting the gun to elevate and traverse

Hi, Two questions, First from whom are you buying on line ?
Whilst there are many top quality vendors, there are also total vagabonds, If you have not yet checked the "BLACKLIST" I suggest you do so with immediate effect,
Second Why a Bulldog ? Just a side point, You can get a HENG LONG Tiger 1 for about the same price as the H L Bulldog if you shop around.
If you want to learn about upgrading a 1/16 RC Tank an HL Bulldog would be the last place I would start.
The suggestion of a Tiger 1 is a good one, this Tank is much larger which makes it easier for unlearned fingers to work in, and there are far more Upgrades available for it than any other Tank whereas finding upgrades for the Bulldog is a challenge, although they are out there as a search using the SEARCH BOX on the top right hand side of this page will prove.
BUT this is of course your decision and whatever your choice be assured you will get all the help we can give.

Depends how much you want to spend?

Bulldog things you can buy?:
Metal suspension.
Metal wheels with rubber tyres.
Metal barrel.
Metal periscope covers.
Jerry cans.
Metal machine gun for roof.
Turret vent.
Metal tracks.
MG Ammunition crates.

Bulldog things you can change for free?:
Turret roof vent/position, periscope cover heights.
Hull drivers periscope heights.
Tool rack height.
Slim down plastic on exhausts, and front rear mudguards.

You can also lower the upper hull by cutting 2mm off the top of the lower hull, and 2mm off the upper hull screw mounts. Fit Jagdpanther low profile gearboxes.

I've done three Bulldogs in the past, and currently have one other on my workbench plus another to rebuild for someone. They are great runners, and go over any terrain with ease. They run really well on the stock tracks, wheels and suspension, hence why so few Bulldogs get these fitted.

What can't you do with a Bulldog? Great tank, endless possibilities. I guess now I'll have to do a Duster like the real one, instead of a paper panzer.

I can honestly say I've had more fun with this tank than I ever thought I would. Just the headlight mod to the front was a lot of fun. Came out pretty good, too, if ya ask me. Of course, the real one only has one headlight on each side and the other of the pair is some special night vision light or something, but with dual LEDs it brings to mind the front of a 60s Corvette.

And in about five minutes I can switch over to this hull top and run a conventional Bulldog. For some reason the Clark works pretty well with this tank. It's not so great in the Sherman, but seems a good match for the M-41.

I also have a bulldog, Its was the first tank I bought and apart from a paint and weathering job its completely stock and never given an ounce of trouble. I know she's from the 50's and not WW 11 but as a runner I carn't fault them. the shape lends itself to be used as a base for other scratch builds, and as you said because a lot of people don't like them they are cheap to pick up. Best of luck and go for it.

The HL Bulldog is a great runner and a lot can be done to correct the mistakes on the turret so its a good tool to learn on. Its biggest drawback is that the hull is not really 1/16th scale, it is the same size as the as the M26 "snow leopard" while in reality it was a slightly smaller tank in width and length and height and very lightly armored.
If the scale size of the hull doesn't bother you I'd say by all means get it and use it to practice your modeling skills.

Definitely get a 'Bulldog'. It's a great runner and with just a little work can be made very realistic. Taigen has a version out but it's getting a little rare on the ground.
