In praise of brass gearboxes
In praise of brass gearboxes
I have these 3:1 brass gears I put in my StuG and now putting in a little larger motors. (the 380's from the Steel gearboxes)
These gears free spin like they are made of air..amazing how silky they are! I don't think it matters in any obvious difference power wise... but they are smooth:) Had to cut the back shafts off the motors though they are that close together in the StuG.

The 4.1 steel gearboxes with bearings are the the same way now.
I was always fearful of the brass gearboxes that they would ware out fast or get damaged easily due to being made of brass.

Gary I am so sorry that your rank of Staff SGT has now been elevated to Warrant officer 2,
If it were anyone else I would be offering my congratulations but I know your wish was to retain probably the best SNCO rank in any ones Army.

Re: In praise of brass gearboxes
Compared even to the steel these just float..though less gears to turn than the 4:1. Brass is softer of course and the good is the smoothness and the bad is they would wear more than steel but for these models brass fine imo.

Since I hadn't noticed I kinda wish you hadn't pointed that out. So how does a guy get busted back to being an enlisted man?

Re: In praise of brass gearboxes
I am just in the Process of fitting a pair of "Walterson" 5/1 Brass gearboxes into the hull of my "Asiatam" Panzer 4 and I have to agree with the almost friction free way in which they turn over, tao wrote:Compared even to the steel these just float..though less gears to turn than the 4:1. What does annoy me is that one of the most essential upgrades to any PZ4 is to fit "Output Shaft Support Bearings" and yet the transmission covers will not fit over them once they are in place unless you take a "Dremel" to them to open the covers out, And the really annoying thing is that "ASIATAM" have predrilled the Metal Hull to take "Axle Shaft Support Bearings"

I have been building PZ4s for a few years and the time is long past that the makers got their act together.
