There are two things HL should consider seriously to give up. Removable battery bay and plastic tracks.

There are some photos of the HL T-90 on RC Universe.

A search on YouTube I also found a video made by Heng-Long-Panzer.de

The answer is that HL predominantly sell the tanks as childrens toys, rather than as serious replica's. The way they approach it is to sell the basic plastic version, at a low price (remember that they started out taking on Tamiya), and then having all of the bells and whistles available from aftermarket suppliers. This way the children can get the parents to buy them a 'tank', and the hobbyists can take them to the next level.
I have never had a problem with plastic tracks, they are very durable, though for that clanking realism, metal tracks will do the job. Same goes for batteries, would we seriously trust a child with a Chinese Lipo battery and charger? Nimh or Lithium Ion are the safe route.
I will wait with bated breath for the T-90....

A lot of IR battlers actually prefer the plastic tracks. For IR battling you want a light and agile tank, and plastic tracks accommodate this.

Not everyone wants the same thing in an RC tank model, we all build them differently :D

Besides this H/L make a lot of money selling metal tracks as upgrades so I don't see the plastic tracks disappearing any time soon.

Dear Paul,

I think every person has different taste. You prefer removable battery bay and LiPo battery. I use tape to seal the battery bay to prevent water and dust getting in. I also move the main switch and make a charging port to the rear panel, so I can just leave the battery inside the tank. I only remove the battery if I don't use it for a long time.

When I bought my second tank, the HL Leopard 2A6, I thought I just leave it as it is. No upgrade, no modification until I will replace the entire lower hull with all metal one. But I was wrong, plastic tracks, especially those small but long tracks like of the Leo2, are prone to be thrown off when you drive it off road. My place ground (I had some videos of it in the "all the terrain tanks" thread) is full of grass, stones and sand. I have to drive carefully to avoid stones and always remove grass from the tracks but when the tank goes far from me, it is hard to watch its surrounding. I always have 4 to 5 thrown tracks per 30 minutes play. My mighty PanTiger doesn't have that problem.

The track guide is in my to buy list; since it is Chinese New Year time, I have to wait until everybody gets back to office. I don't live in China but I have friends in China who will help me buying things that I need and ship to me through his company, free of charge. Did I forget to mention that plastic tracks have less traction compared of those metal ones?

I am having endless problems with RC tanks!!! The PanTiger is my first tank and I didn't know about its name before buying it. I want to change it and make a real Tiger, so I ask my friend to buy Tiger's hull for me. Look what he bought for me. The hull has not arrive yet but he send me the photo.

Steelbird, apart from a track guide, a track tensioner and a good set of return rollers will prevent the track riding off the Leopard.

I'd be super wary about leaving a lipo in any model to charge. Apart from the risk of fire destroying the model, if it's a cheaper battery like a Turnigy/Hobby king or Florean one, they have a tendency to swell after a while which could also cause damage. I'd feel more confident about a good quality ROAR/BRCA approve hardcase if anything, as they are less likely to cause problems.

It's a pain for the set of lower &upper hull. My pantiger also have new lower hull. So, that upper hull will be good for nothing. I think I will need to order another upper because it's very cheap. Just a few USD.

For battery, I don't use Lipo. I have a NiMH 4500 which usually run more than an hour after a full charge.
