Contacted Tamiya they think it should be preserved for historical reasons, so decided to keep the old bits but fit new 2 channel rc with servos to old bits and see how we get on. I think with a nice digital 2 channel and servos attached to clutch and speed controller could work. Have seen on ebay mechanical controllers but from Tamiya cars, smaller but not sure if they have gradual power increase so may need to trial and error.
Just to lighten the mood cant imagine you in the loo like that lol.

Interesting News TB....So those Tamiya people...they want to buy the old servos from you....can't imagine what museum or archive would want them except for theirs :wtf:

Addressing the Lighter side of things....I can't imagine anyone doing what's pictured in 43's post....That's just way too hard core :haha:

Good luck with which ever mechanism you find...I think any servo that will fit where it's supposed to go will work out ok

Thats what I was thinking, I might go for a new set then look round for a new speed controller if the other gives up the ghost.

That speed controller looks very much like the insides of an old Lionel Transformer...maybe take a look for a broken one of those ...then maybe some of the copper contact parts might be usable ;)

It will I am organising a trip to the model shop soon going to keep the inportant bits but change the radio gear that works it. It gave me a lift when it moved but like the tank the gear is old, so soon I hope.

Amazing, so it emerges that your really DO have a rarity there. :O All the more amazing that Tamiya deem it to be such... I only wish there were more examples of outmoded models out there- illustrated, and viewable, here on the forum, so that we could all see (especially relative newcomers), how RC tank technology has emerged from the mists of time- and smoke units...of course. Whatever you decide to do with the old girl, at least her innards are viewable here for tank-archaeological purposes. Sounds as if she needs a pacemaker, rather than a full heart transplant. Whatever, do keep us posted
