Panzer 4 turret numbers.

Post by jarndice »

I am looking for a reference source for Panzer 4 Turret numbers with an emphasis on North Africa and Italy.
I have been spoiled by the amount of detail available for the Tiger 1,
There are plenty of Pictures of PZ 4s but very rarely any numbers.
The "F2" (F/G/H) Turret is my preferred area of interest but I will happily settle for the short barrel.

I think I am about to upset someone :haha:

Interesting challenge, Shaun...No doubt you've scoured more sources than I could find, but I looked at websites for the Africa Korps, Munster Museum etc., and you're right...numbers are obscured or just plain hard to find; but found an interesting link here:-
and the link is..http://www.worldwarphotos.info/gallery/ ... tanks-2-3/

Shaun, as far as I know, it depended on the Division and era as to how tanks were numbered. Although there was a principle of the three digit system i.e. Company/Platoon/Tank, sometimes it was ignored or changed to fool people. The Afrike Corps was the 15th and 21st Divisions. I know that some tanks from the 21st Division carried only one number but it also appears many carried none.

Thanks 43 and you Bill, It is good to know that its not just me finding the numbers so elusive.
I know that a lot of Panzer 4s used three figure codes in the 800 + group as well as the 300 + group so I might make up my own with a stencil.

The rebellious Northern Tribesman here again... A brace of F2s here, one is presumably an illustration based on original research (El Alamein example), the other just a photo..I forget from where. Food for thought anyway, maybe o-

When I first joined this lunatic asylum I had already begun my first build ,a Panzer 4 and I completed it with the help of PAINLESS in particular and a raft of input from other members of the Forum,
At the time I scrolled down to the "REFERENCE CAMO" section and their were pages of pictures of PZ4s Now when I look there is very little left,
What annoys me is that at the time, I downloaded all the CAMO illustrations of the Tiger 1 to my printer but not the PZ 4,
Your Photograph of the PZ 4 at least confirms the use of the "300" block of turret numbers, for which I am very grateful, The picture also showed something I have not seen before, The use of spare track between the Muffler and the engine, which must offer some protection from incoming in that area of the Tank.
This hobby is like a quick sand, it just pulls you in ever deeper, you start off with an ambition to drive a 1/16 scale Tank around the garden and you end up (if it ever ends?) knowing the family history of some of the Tank crews and along the way you have become an expert in micro electronics whilst at the same time you lose both your eyesight and your marbles,
The saving grace is that I have made friends with people from quite literally around the world and the stupidity is that if I were to meet one or all of them I would walk past not recognising any of them :{ :lolno: :haha:
Thanks "43", I hope the wind and the snow arn't giving you and yours too much grief, Have a good weekend.
shaun.
