Design ideas

Post by Bluelion »

I have an early production tiger 1 from torro , I need some design ideas for numbers etc. I would like to make it reasonably historically accurate although I'm not a rivet counter...
I don't want to use zimmerit as its already got a good paint Joe with fading etc
My first tank was not very accurate but that was my first try so must do better this time round.
Thanks

If there's one thing the internet isn't short of, it's Tiger tanks references.

There are also aftermarket decals and transfers in 1/16.

Just google early Tiger I and find a look you like and see if the numbers are available, if not make your own stencils.

I can look if I still have the Tamiya decal set for the I, if I do, it's yours.
What, me worry?

The first thing you need to do is ask yourself whether it is in Russia, or Tunisia/Italy, then whether it is Army or SS and if it is a command Tank or not, after that you will find searching for the right batch of numbers easier and more likely to look authentic.
Wikipedia is quite good here but if you really do want accuracy then there are some good reference works available.
Best of all there were quite a few Tigers without any numbers on them especially in Russia. :haha:

E-bay has lots of decals from peddinghaus and some from others as well. There are lots of different types and styles for tigers available and they are reasonably priced too.

I built an early production Tiger 1 (from Taigen/Torro bits) and, having sifted through the innumerable Tiger 1 refs. on the net, and ditched the dross, I got my best ideas from:
http://www.stugiii.com/germanvehiclecamouflage.html
and, http://www.alanhamby.com/early.shtml
By the way, early Tiger 1s didn't have Zimmerit, and I don't think it was retrofitted on early models..so save yourself some potential fitting niggles there.....and bon chance. I have a Torro King Tiger, and it was beautifully finished at Rctank.de. So much so, that I didn't want to risk making a balls up of 'weathering' or 'battle damaging it'. After all, all those real tanks were once new too... :D

Thanks gents I do have large files built up of photos but most are in black and white so I was hoping for suggestions, good news about the zimmerit on my new tiger 1 early , not so good news as I've already covered my first tiger with zimmerit but hey ho . I'll have to live with that . That was supposed to be Otto carrius tank with numbers 123 and 217 stencilled on to it from the 502 heavy tank batt Russia.
I do fancy an ss tiger from Normandy as I've made some nice foliage for camo
I'll just say he had goering parachute a consignment in specially for Otto to test , I should get away with it

I would need David to confirm it but I would be surprised if any early Tiger 1's were in Normandy in June 1944, I would expect them to be late or perhaps a few "mid" or half and half Tigers by that date but I have been wrong before :haha:
