So today I took my Leo2 off road. My Leo2 is 100% stock components and it navigate OK in long grass though there are some slipped gears and thrown tracks. It's plastic after all.

COOL RUNNINS STEEL B ....If you epoxy those clutch gears they won't slip ...and will run as solid as metal gearboxes till the bearings melt
Looks like you had a bunch of fun....that's quite a big lot ...great place to test your tanks

Model tanks always some like they're straining when on grass. The issue I had was that the henglong rx-18 doesn't brake the inside track when turning so the resistance of the surface pulls that track a long causing it either not to turn or to make very shallow turns. This can be improved by getting the 4 shaft taigen gearboxes as these have more resistance by virtue of being lower ratio. The other option is to get an upgraded electronics package. The Tamiya dmd/mfu combo does this, I think the Clark does, IBU doesn't though.

Both of my Heng Long 2.4Ghz have the same behavior as yours. My solution is stop the tank then turn. In such case the inside track will not move so you'll have a sharp turn.

By the way, my Pantiger has 4.1 metal gearboxes and metal tracks. The problem now is the idlers are not in straight lines anymore due to poor plastic hull. I am waiting the track tensioners' arrival. So idlers installed on track tensioner would solve the problem.

In the case of the plastic gearboxes...the primary gear (the first big one that meets the pinion gear of the motor) is three pieces ....the metal shaft and two nylon gear pieces...the inner spins on the outer....I think HL and other manufacturers that still use the plastic gear boxes..put that in as a safety...so you don't strip the plastic ....anyway...you have to remove the gearboxes and separate the metal cages ...or take them apart lol...remove that three piece gear ...get some two part epoxy or epoxy putty and fill the open space...make sure the gear surface is level when the epoxy is dried...you can sand it a little to make sure...then you just reinstall the gear and you should be good to go...A lot of guys won't admit it...but there is a bunch of people that still use the plastic gearboxes....they are much quieter than the metal and if properly taken care of ..can last just as long

One of the reason I don't upgrade anything on this Leo2 is I plan to buy a full metal lower hull. The lower hull advertised on taobao.com include metal lower hull, full closed metal gearboxes with 550 motors, metal road wheels, idlers and drive sprockets. Of course, metal tracks too but no electric or battery. The lower hull works perfect with HL's upper hull, and the package costs RMB2200 which translate into $360. When time comes, I will do it. Now still waiting for my Tiger I components.

Was it you that showed me that hull before?....It's really nice looking...and the price is very good...too bad there isn't one for my Abrams...I take that back...I've seen one...but they want like a 1000 US for it..and it only has one motor in it ...so it's a clutch drive like the old Tamiyas ...don't quite like that idea as it means you have to upgrade everything...not worth it for me here in Hawaii...that hull looks perfect as I could still run the normal HL components

Good reason for doing what you did...though locking those clutches would keep the gearboxes from making that "stripping" noise

I think it was me who showed you the metal lower hull. At that time, I haven't got the plastic Leo2 yet. Now I'm moving slowly, slowly to that goal by having an RTR plastic Leo2. It's fun time so we enjoy it slowly. No need to own everything at once. I have relationship with some Chinese guys that's why I always seek things from taobao.com. The guy buy products and ship to me through his company, and I send money to him also through his company. So shipping and money transfer are free for me.

I will try locking the clutches when have time. By the way, I also cut half of the rear mud covers. These covers get stuck with rocks when you run over one. I tried to hinge them to make them movable but I don't have that skill.
