Best glue.....and other Noob type questions....

Post by Sirdubalot »

Hi,

I'm a complete newcomer to the hobby so I'm sorry in advance for the questions of which I'm sure some of which will be basic.

Firstly I would like to add some detail to my tank and I was wondering if anyone could recommend the best type of glue for sticking the various items to the tank.

Many thanks in advance,

Willy......

Good afternoon,
Willy, asking a question like this is akin to going onto a Car Enthusiast website and asking which motor oil to use in your engine. You are going to get a lot of information and it will all generally be good. So I'll start off. I use LocTite Ultra Control Gel for detail attachment. I've tested this adhesive on my tanks for years now and parts will literally break before they break off. It has great shear strength. For permanent ( read as PERMANENT ) mounting of larger parts, I use LocTite's 24 hr Epoxy and hold the part in question on, while the epoxy cures overnight, with a couple of drops of the Gel Ultra Control. Anything above that, I drill and use metal pins along with the superglue and epoxy to hold hull components together, etc. Good luck, Sir! Others will be along with their favs soon.
regards,
Painless

Hi Painless,

I apologise for my question, when I wrote it I did think it was a bit stupid, but I just didn't want to go using the wrong glue and leaving residue all over my tank or just messing it up completely.

Thanks very much for your reply and advice it's much appreciated, as you can imagine I'm on a steep learning curve so all advice is great.

Many thanks.

Willy most of the superglues especially the "LOCTITE" range are good but what makes or breaks a good glue is the applicator,
A lot of the time you need to be spot on with where it goes and some applicators or nozzles will just smear the glue everywhere except where it is needed,
Check E-BAY and see what is on offer,
Oh by the way, Painless was not having a go at your question, he as the rest of us on the Forum know only to well that your question while we will have heard it before is a new question to you.
And Painless and I and just about everyone else here wants to see your questions, After all how else do we get to show how clever we are ??? :haha:

Willy,
No need for apologies. Welcome to the Hobby! I just forgot to put a smiley face at the end of my sentences like I normally do ;o) My Brother-In-Armor, Jarndice, has the right of it. It would get awful boring around here if no one new asked any questions. ;o) Forgive me, I am currently re reading Steinbrunn's book about his Masterpiece build of a 1/6 scale 21st Century Stuart and wondering how far I want to descend into Madness ( like he did ;o) and wondering why I am bothering with my own tank when his version is the real tank itself, carefully rebuilt in miniature right down to the number of bolts. *chuckles* Enjoy and post pics of your tanks as you work on them, please.
regards,
Painless

For me, it depends what im sticking down.

If its small/fiddly, I use loctite super glue.
If its big and structural, I use 2 part epoxy resin.
If its something like sand bags, boxs, thinks that are a fair size but may need to come off in the future for a re-spray, I use hot glue gun.

For glueing stuff, I use superglue in a bottle and use a toothpick to apply it. For sniffing.... ;) ;D

Thanks everyone for the replies which have been great, I’ve ordered some samples from Ebay to try out, so I’ll give them a go and experiment before I start on my tank. All is well and thanks for the welcome to the forum its always difficult, I did a search to see if there was any other threads on a similar topic before I asked, I am very grateful for all your help.

I have two tanks a Sherman and a Leopard, I will attempt to place some pictures up in the next day or so, Ill place them on this thread if that appropriate please let me know if they should go elsewhere. So thanks again for the advice.

Regards

Willy,
if you will be putting up a build then the relevant build forum (HENG LONG/TAMIYA/OTHER) is the correct site.
if you are downloading photographs of your finished work then the SHOW OFF site is the place for them.
I look forward to viewing examples of your hard work.

Late to the game but this is exactly what I do as well.
