Striping Paint

Hi All

So I have a tank I'm thinking could do with a respray...I was considering this time to actually have a go at removing the previous layer of paint, I figured as I'm removing the zimm of this one I might as well take the paint of the rest of the tank too..I wondered if you guys know of any good products..tips...

Dettol

I agree with spongebob "Dettol" and you could also use "Brake fluid" it is as effective,
Don't forget to remove any metallic or electrical fittings then immerse the desired item in a bucket containing the appropriate fluid and leave overnight. Then place the item in a container of cold water and using a fingernail brush, making sure the Bristles are not too stiff, brush the old paint off, you may have to re-immerse in "Dettol" or "Brake fluid" to get a proper job done.

When you come to repaint your Tank if you are going to use Acrylic paint then you will have a need for Acrylic thinners,
For too long I have used TAMIYA'S 250ml Isopropyhl alcohol (Acrylic Thinners) which costs a fortune,
I discovered that "MAPLINS" sell one litre cans of the stuff for £14.99,
I don't know if you can get it even cheaper elsewhere but MAPLINS being both a High Street and an on line store makes it very handy.

Meh I've used water to thin paint on pretty much all my tanks with no issues.

Hi, Tom, I was thinking about cleaning my airbrush rather than thinning the paint,
But of course you are absolutely right about using water as an effective paint thinner for acrylic paints.

you can also use mr muscle oven cleaner spray can that will do the job to put all the bits you want to take the paint off in a big plastic bag and spray it over them leave for a day then wash under running water and use a toothbrush to rub it

If you use Mr Muscle, be very careful - rubber gloves essential. It contains sodium hydroxide, which is very good at dissolving fingers. If you get any on bare flesh, the flesh will feel greasy - this is dissolved fat/flesh. Presumably, ordinary sodium hydroxide in solution will also strip paint. If so, it is available in crystal form from DIY stores and is very much cheaper.
