I burned a HL board

Post by atcttge »

So...

There I was tinkering with my Leopard 2 which had the M1's stock HL electronics board inside. The Leo2's turret traverse has a Tamiya Rev Tuned motor to make traverse faster.

Earlier, I was playing it when the turret seized and failed to traverse. I thought it got stuck or something after too many bumps on rocks and trees and other stuff.

So I took it apart and found that the Tamiya motor has seized. When I apply stick movement, the motor wouldn't work. I then give the motor a nudge and there it turns but it eventually slows and gets stuck again.

I do this with the electronics out of the tank and only the battery, board, and Tamiya motor on the traverse socket all connected. I get the motor moving again after giving it a nudge and keep on running it when I smell and see smoke. I then see that the smoke and a bit of flame is coming out of the power socket on the board. So I quickly disconnect the LiPo. The plug from the power switch to the board has melted and fused to the socket. Here's the damage:

The Leo's stock electronics are still here and I can use the M1's stock turret traverse unit as a replacement so no big loss. But I guess this incident has me wanting to get an IBU2 Pro soon without waiting for the IBU3 instead ahehehe

Hi sometimes when motors go like that they just pull way to much current hence the weakest link gets hot ie. if the plug and socket was slightly loose the current arcing across the joint is the weakest link.
If you are lucky you might find that the board is still okay. you can replace the socket outer from an old board or replace the whole socket (maplins used to sell them).
I melted the socket when I dropped a blob of hot glue into the gearbox with out noticing it (the board survived just needed a new socket outer)
