Ok gents, the final answer.

"The small red light on the inside of that row is a black out drive light. It is used at night as a reference aid to other driver's following tanks. It only emits a very weak light and it visible using night vision equipment or the naked eye up close." - Jason

So its part of a reference convoy light. In theory this area does not need any light source if you want to simulate the real thing, but then again its up to the modeller to decide what he likes. :)

jarndice you are still correct on this!

So 100% no reverse light?

I don't think there is no other lights in the tail cluster for the Leopard 2 to indicate a reverse light so the likely answer is no reverse light. But again I'm not 100% sure.

As for the Challenger 2: The right tail light assembly contains the taillight, brake light and licence plate illumination and reflector. You can tell the light cluster that it belongs to the "right" side (beside where you can see it) is because of the licence plate illumination (licence plate is located above the right tail light assembly).

The left tail light had the same set up minus the licence plate illumination. In its place, there is a screwed cap. I'm not sure what is the purpose of this. Maybe its a socket connector/slave connector.

I could not see any similar blackout light that is found on the Leopard 2 tank on the Challenger 2. The light cluster on the Challenger 2 is placed vertically to minimise its space as the Challenger 2 carries an external fuel drum that covers a lot of space on the rear end.
