Slowing tank down method

Post by tao »

For my KT and Tiger I have 480 promax motors and low ratio 4.1 (4 shaft) steel gearboxes. Broke them in per Max's method and still wanted a little more really slow creep. So I added two pairs of diodes (3Amp 100v Diode Rectifier) to the neg
of each motor and now it really creeps along v e r y s l o w l y :) and can still pivot turn on carpet. These diodes are cheap
and I used them for slight speed reduction on recoil and turret. If you use them- just make sure to reverse each pair or they won't work! There are white bands to show direction. Also you can set it up so you can unplug them to get it faster again etc.

On my radio..DXi 6..I also lowered the travel adjustment on the elevator/throttle to about 65% forward/50% reverse) to lower top speed and making back up easier. What I wanted to do was have not only a sound difference between KT and another lighter type of tank but also a bit of handling and speed difference for effect. Note I hear you can add a 8 cog motor pinion instead of 10 but not sure where to get one and the right size??? (slight adjustments would have to be made on mounting though)

What radio gear do you use? Some let you adjust the tanks top speed, but it sounds like you got it.

Question for you, did you know the Tiger and King Tiger weren't exactly slow, they got around pretty well for being such huge monsters.

The KT had a top road speed of just under 42kph only 3kph slower then a Panthers top road speed, however the KT had a higher cruising speed then the Panther and a better power to weight ratio then the Panther.

Spektrum DXi so yes did that..and for sure the Tigers were quite fast..I just wanted to be able to really get very slow low end movement.. the top end is still quite fast imo with this modification. But yes even the KT was second in speed for the German tanks only to the Panther. I think the major issue was the strain on the drive train.. so one had to be very delicate driving it. I also heard the Germans used straight gears and ours were "angled" (can't recall the term atm) but it makes for a stronger gear system.

If the "angle" is in the teeth themselves, then I believe "helical" is the word you're looking for, otherwise it might be "beveled". Straight gear teeth are known as "spur" gears. Our gear boxes have spur gears.
When FDR coined the phrase "The Arsenal of Democracy", he was talking about Detroit. Proud to live in the 2nd most violent city in America!!

I think it comes down to the fun effect/poetic license at least for me..slowing a large tank or making it sound deeper even though it may had the same engine :)

Short update..3 pairs of diodes got it just right on KT. Still has the power to pivot turn on carpet and for me enough top end speed but I can now get it to really crawl along super slow..which with the heavy sound (TBS and 15 watt amp-FRS 8) looks cool.
Anyway probably only use one or two pair in Panther to allow that to move faster at max.

Don't forget the Panthers top speed was only for a little while before they had to back it down to its cruising speed and then the KT would drive right past the Panther.

True! Sometimes running them indoors there is so little room so I love the very slow movement..kinda like how the KT at Samur moves when getting back inside! Plus I think the deep sound with very slow movement makes it look more real.
