M4 90V

Post by Roboticus_Prime »

I've been gathering parts and researching for this build for some time now. Now I've got enough parts to start the build. The M4 90V is the Sherman with a Pershing Turret prototype. This build is 90% Taigen parts mixed with a little Mato, and will be Taigen IR capable.

I spent what time I had last night trial fitting parts, so here it is.

It's not all bolt-on though. The transmission cover doesn't quite fit over the V2 gearboxes, and will need a little dremmel work. Also, the Mato sprockets will need to be modified to accept the Taigen screw.

Looking good - I have seen photos of the real 90mm Sherman, based on an Easy8 with HVSS.

Update time.

I spent the last couple nights grinding away at the transmission cover so the 4:1 gears would fit. Once that was done, it still had loads of tension on the left sprocket. Upon further inspection, I found that the main shaft on the lower motor was rubbing on the left gearbox.

Image

My fix was to use my Dremel to drill a small divot on that spot to allow the shaft to spin freely. The other scratches are from the motor leads. They had to be bent out to keep them from touching the right gearbox too. I also put some electrical tape on those spots just in case.

After that, the lower hull went together in a breeze! With easy turning gearboxes! 8)

Don't mind the gun. The turret innards were scavenged to convert my cousin's non S&S HL Tiger to Taigen electronics.

Now, I'm just waiting on the rest of my turret parts to show up.

Update time.

First things first. I had to clean up the lower half of the turret to make room for the recoil unit and slip ring.

Before:

After:

Next up, since I managed to break the airsoft LED in my Pershing, I decided that I'd swap the barrels, and use the busted one to modify for recoil and IR.

Image

I'm currently hacking the 90V's barrel and formulating how I'll mod it. I'll let you know what I come up with!

I really should paint the Pershing...

I couldn't wait. I started the hack job.

Image

Turns out, that the HL barrel sleeve is quite thick, and using the stock barrel to recoil probably wouldn't be worth the effort.

Here it is with the airsoft barrel in the recoil unit.

Image

Looks like there is just a tiny bit of space around it. A quick look into my parts box and I found a piece of brass tube leftover from the Pershing's motor mounts and...

Image

It's a perfect fit! Now all I need to do is get the correct length, and attach the muzzle break.

Got a little more work done on the recoil unit. I drilled and installed a screw to the inner barrel to keep it from launching out the front.

Image

I also had to cut a channel into the side of the case to allow clearance.

Image

Right now I'm working on a way to attach the outer barrel, but I'll probably wind up just using Gorilla Glue. :haha:
