New Boy
Hi, After a couple of years temptation. I have succumbed and bought myself a 1/16 Tamiya Tiger 1 full option. This is my first large scale tank, though many years ago I made 1//76 Airfix tanks and the odd 1/35 scale. This will almost certainly be my magnum opus, so I aim to produce the best I can. I will have a lot of questions, many of which will probably seem a bit stupid to experienced modellers. Please bear with me and don't be too hard on a novice large scale tank builder.

Hallo and welcome to the Forum, Don't worry about asking questions, for although we probably have heard/read your questions before, we know that these are all new questions to you.
Where are you geographically (this is not me being nosy, it helps when offering advise)? And you managed to make me smile when you intimated that this Tamiya would be the sole example of a 1/16 Tank in your possession,
YEAH RIGHT!!!
99% of us believed that when we started in this hobby/madhouse, and most of us are only limited in how many Tanks we own by the "WIFE?PARTNER" or the BANK MANAGER pointing out that 10 + 1/16 Tanks and assorted military vehicles is too much.
Enjoy the Forum and if you know stuff then please tell us.

As Mr Jarndice stated, this "thing" we do is only limited by our imagination, and the creative income source we decide to divert to it, not unlike the '80's "Contra Deal"
Your first choice of build subject is a high bar, and one that I hope to one day take on...........
In the mean time, glean what info you need, from those that pitch in, and fill us all in along the way with pictures & stuff, so we can see you struggle like we do
Welcome in mate, (hey fellas...........he reckons he's only getting one- ONE

Hello SS, from Detroit. I'm Gary, and these guys are right. You'll soon discover that no one can eat just one. I'd ask your name but I like that Silver Surfer can be shortened to SS. A very cool handle for a tanker, IMO. "Hi, I'm SS. First name? Waffen. NOW FEAR ME, DUMKOPF!"

Welcome silversurfer1947. I have joined the dark side (according to some) and have purchased three Tamiya tanks. None are the Tiger so I will be looking forward to your build photo's if you are so inclined to post them up.

Re: New Boy
Thanks for the warm welcome. I will certainly try to post some pictures, once I get started. So far I have opened the box and read the instructions a few times. More reading will e called for before I start assembly. I shall be taking things slowly, as I really don't want to mess it up.
It had not struck me how my ID could be abbreviated, but I will answer to SS, to save people a little bit of typing!
I will start a construction and question thread in the appropriate forum shortly. I think questions will be to the fore.

Aye, Welcome Siversurfer, from a salt and pepper surfer. I'm new too, and would like to extend my thanks to the forum for the warm greeting (and a spot of antipodean rugby joshing) I received. As living proof that 'the one and only' is almost certain to morph into
the two, then three..and only, I have just acquired my second tank, even before the paint has dried on the first....I'd intended to build the highest spec (non- Tamiya) tank I could afford, which I've done, only to be beguiled by the lines of an airbrushed King Torro Metal ed.
on the RCtank.de website. Good thing I'm divorced..this feels like cheating

Re: New Boy
If you're smart you'll just pick up a cheap Heng long right now (I'd strongly recommend the Tauchpanzer, a truly great little tank) for just over a hundred bucks (US, so less in pounds, ebay is your friend), and use the excuse that you want to learn to drive on the cheap tank so you won't take any chances on crashing your new and expensive Tammy. Then when you finish the Tamiya you can try your hand at upgrading the lesser brands. Here's my little Tauchpanzer and I've had a blast doing a lot of work to it. It's still stock TG electronics but it's got a komodo to get rid of track recoil and I added metal tracks/sprockets/idlers and brass dual ratio GBs so it's definitely much better now but even when it was 100% plastic and running on the stock RX-18 I loved it and found it a real kick to mess about with. I had airsoft BBs all over the house in seconds flat.
I made this video at the beginning of the year for a young man that was getting discouraged with the hobby, but it really does show off my little PzIII. I'm seriously considering an Asp for this little gem. I know the paint job isn't accurate and this is before the Komodo and the brass gears, but like I say in the video, stock out of the box with nylon gears and plastic tracks it was loads of good time in a little tan package.
Seriously though, building a Tamiya kit gives you the joys of both RC and static modeling so if you're not yet familiar with them you should check out the website and magazine Finescale Modeler. I built a static Tamiya Tiger One in 1/48 scale shortly before I got bitten by the RC Tank bug and I've built lots and lots of Tammy aircraft so I know they make great stuff.
