New member in the US

Post by capt midnight »

Hello to all. I've been lurking on the boards for a few weeks and finally had to sign up. I found this board after I had already gotten my first tank, but you all really helped out in tearing it down and rebuilding it.

A little about me. I'm 53 years old. Been modeling and R/C all my life. Picked it up from my father. Mostly doing Sci Fi modeling and loads of scratch building.

This is my first R/C tank, and the bug has already bitten. Just ordered up 3 more vehicles to add to my first. I've got a HL Tiger 1, and am waiting on a KT, Sherman, and Panzer IV, all HL. I really like the HL's. Cheap, reasonably detailed, and sturdy.

I'll post some pictures of my Tiger in the HL build thread for all to see.

Again, thanks to all for having me!

Bill

As requested, Wolf. Just got done posting them up. Heading out to work shortly. Been aiming to get this done for a week or so, but it has been hectic around here.

William? Bill? Welcome to the Forum,
I hope you enjoy it here, ask all the questions you want, and yes we probably have been asked them before but the question will be new to you, so ask away.
HENG LONG is a good starting point for Tank building and as you get involved you will begin to mix and match because most TAIGEN and TORRO spare parts and accessories are interchangeable, Although beware of Gearboxes, they can be a problem unless the dealer assures you it is for your Brand and model of Tank.
I would recommend a visit to the HENG LONG Builds section of the Forum to get some idea of the scope of what can be done and any hints you are looking for can usually be found on the "TIPS and TRICKS pages, and if you still cannot find the answer, try typing your query into the "Search" box on the top right hand side of this page. ???
The basic needs for this hobby are a very rich and understanding Partner and Bank Manager and the patience of a saint, with that combination you cannot go wrong :haha:

Welcome, Bill. I just recently joined RCTW myself (hung out at another forum for a couple years before that) and this forum is really well set up and the guys here are first rate.

It's always good to see another Yank join up. Just where in the states are you?
When FDR coined the phrase "The Arsenal of Democracy", he was talking about Detroit. Proud to live in the 2nd most violent city in America!!

Thanks for the greeting gang!

I'm located in the southern part of Indiana. A little town called Cannelton, to be exact. I've been into R/C for ever, but this is my first tank.

I did a lot of checking around before dropping the bomb on this and the HL's looked like the best bet for me. I'm all up for saving some money, (get to spend it on MORE toys!), and I love the tinkering aspect. I think half the joy is tearing the vehicle apart and making it your own.

I'm not a rivet counter by any means, but I do like to get the details pretty close. As long as I'm happy with it, it doesn't have to be an exact match for a particular vehicle. Does any of that make any sense?

A lot of the modeling and pattern work I do is kind of exacting, so being able to just "wing it" is kind of relaxing. I've already ordered 3 more tanks, and one of them, the PanzerIV, I plan on doing a lot of detailing upgrades to. A lot of the "fiddley bits" I might be leaving off, as I plan on using these guys pretty heavily. The wife has already agreed to giving me a part of the back yard for a battle field. I'm guessing she doesn't want me in the front yard as the neighbors will know for sure that I am not quite right! :haha:

No need to show off Mr Midnight :haha: :haha:

Good to have you along. I assume after many years of RC you will be all over the electronic side of these in no time, unlike myself !
These tanks are really as deep and complicated/detailed as you want to make them, but at least they dont drop from the sky & become a lawn dart eh :problem:
Enjoy your time in here & please feel free to ask advice & certainly offer any as you see fit.

Oh........hows the all-giving wife with fiscal impropietry !!............a battlefield is one thing, but the gear to fill it :/ :/
