HL 2.4GHZ replacement

Post by DRC »

A couple of months back I fell down stairs while carrying one of my HL Tiger 1 models and as a result it sustained 'battle damage'. I decided that the only way to repair this was to buy a replacement lower hull complete with RX18 controller. The items were described as being taken from a new tank and had been tested before being offered for sale and I had no reason to doubt this at the time (and still don't really). Well, a couple of months later and the thing won't start! The battery is charged, all the connections are secure and in the right positions and I've even changed the crystals and the transmitter. The headlights come on and flash but there is no engine start up, no smoke and definately no movement, not even the slightest twitch!

One can only stare at the inside of a Heng Long tank so many times before drastic action is called for, so, last week I decided to buy a HL 2.4GHZ transmitter and receiver. They have just come, fine, there doesn't seem to be any instructions in the box? There are some printed in very fine and small printing on the back in grey ink on the brown cardboard (and in chinese and broken english) but not enough for a novice like me.

Is it a case of just plugging everything in as before? What's a binding cable and should there have been one in the box? I have this sinking feeling that I will put everything in, the lights will blink and them nothing, just like before.

Can any one offer any advice?

Yes sir DRC....just do a wire by wire swap out...if it is the new gen 2.4 which I suspect it is....you will notice there is no plug in for the volume and on/off for the smoker...these will now be controlled by the TX :D

Good Luck

PS. make sure your battery is NOT CONNECTED ;)

Thanks ALPHA

It is the new generation controller, bit disappointed though, there are no joysticks (Not that much of a problem as I have some secondhand ones) and I am a little worried by the apparent lack of an antenna. Now, I know that that little stubby thing on the top is it but the one I have just pulls off and appears to be little more then a small black plastic hollow cap??? I will see tonight when I sit down and wire the thing up.

Are the transmitter and receiver paired at the factory or is there some secret ritual I have to perform while standing in an old zinc bucket?

They should be paired at the factory, but the only way to find out is to wire it all up, put fresh and fully charged batteries in the tx and the tank, and press the start button.

The 2.4ghz will give you much nicer control of the tank, it's all a lot smoother.

If it doesn't start, pop back on here and we will track and fix any problems. Just make sure that you do a plug for plug swapover, it is usually a good idea to just connect the switch, and drive motors first and test that it drive ok, then the other plugs so that you can check the turret functions.
Always switch the tank off before you plug or unplug anything

Might not be...usually there is a binding button..it would plug in where your antenna would usually go ...if it doesn't have the plug with the button...check with your seller to see if he can send you one...there might be a slight charge for it...but the improvement over the crystal units is well worth it

If you bought the TX/MFU together it should've come with a black pushbutton thingie with a three pin jst plug on one end. That's the bind button. It plugs in where the RX used to plug in on the RX18.

Where are you? I have a bind button if you need it. I wish I had known you needed one, I have a spare HL 2.4 rig but it's first gen so it doesn't have smoke/volume on the TX. It came out of my T-34, which I got when they first hit the market.

I have tried to install the controller this morning. Freshly charged power pack, new batteries in the handset. I have swopped all cables over but still no life!

I have taken some photos but the file size is too big to be uploaded to this site and I can't remember how to reduce the size.

Stand down! I went back to it and tried again, didn't touch anything and now it works!!

But just when you solve one problem another raises it's head. I have fitted metal sprokets and HL metal tracks, having now run it the tracks are wanting to climb off the drive wheels. :(

Turning it off after binding isn't included in the general instructions :haha: ...found that out on my own ;)

You have to block it....put it on a block of wood or something to raise it off the tracks...check the tension ...also run it slow on a hard surface and see where the tracks start to come off...could be number of issues...the simplest is a bum link in the track or the tension

GOOD LUCK
