Early, Mid, Late production Tiger question.

Post by jackalope »

My current Tiger build was supposed to be a Mid Production Tiger but I just received a set of Late drive sprockets, Idler wheels, Road wheels, and Tracks and they look REALLY GOOD on the Tiger and I would like to run them on it however I don't want GLARINGLY wrong errors on my Tiger either. So far my turret is correct (that I know of) for a Mid production Tiger and has the late model style commanders cupola and has the track links on both sides. The Fifle air cleaners were never installed, the jack wasn't either, neither was any of the other stuff on the rear bulkhead except the exhaust and my scratch made mud flaps.

So what else would stand out as an OMG what were you thinking that I should look for? Oh and yes I did reshape the turret escape hatch to be flat with no beveled edges and smoothed the sharp edges on the mantle. Anything else I should look at changing or detailing to make it a Late model Tiger?

Thanks guys!

Terry,
Sorry I missed this. Here you go, a site you will have fun reading through. It's my personal favorite.: http://www.alanhamby.com/tiger.html

Some while back in one of my know it all moods I described the differences between Early, Mid, and Late model Tigers Unfortunately for me David Byden saw my learned discourse and pointed out that the term "MID" is one that modellers and model makers use rather than the factory :{ ,
There is a distinctive "Early" Tiger and an equally distinctive "Late" Tiger but the "Mid" merely represents the changeover on the production line from one to the other so that you will see Tigers that appear early but have late wheels and vice versa.
It just means in wartime if you have a batch of Wheels or exhausts or whatever left over you do not waste them you fit them, thereby producing a "BITSA". :lolno:
This means you can intergrate your late parts with the early type Tiger and still be right although I would expect that the "SS" Battalions were equipped with either Early or Late and no mongrels as they always got the best equipment but I am only guessing at that. :problem:
shaun
I think I am about to upset someone :haha:

It's worth remembering they'd be repaired in field or battalion maintenance units with whatever is on hand. Although there maybe something in a manual somewhere which says don't mix x with y.

Thanks guys! Looks like I need to close up the 1 sighting hole on the mantle and I should have a nice "late" Tiger. Totally forgot about that, thanks Painless for the link to remind me.

There's no such thing as a "late sprocket"... the same sprocket was used in all Mids and Lates.
There's no specific "late track"... the track from the Late Tigers was used on the second half of the Mid Tigers.

I can't really answer your question without a photo of your Tiger or an equivalent model.

David, thanks I'll try to get some pics up later today when I'm home from work.

The tracks have ice cleats and the drive sprockets have a different center cap then the "early" ones.
