Tarr Mark II issue.

Post by jackalope »

Took my newest Tiger out for a run around the yard today giving 2 eye droppers full of Megasteam and had at it. After a few minutes the smoke was rolling out great after 20 min. of running I brought it back to me to take back inside and I smelled plastic burning I shut it off right away as I had issues with a different brand smoker catching fire in my other Tiger I take no chances!

I opened the engine hatch and found the positive side wire to the heating element had burned into the housing and melted the wire off. My other Mark II has been perfect for hours of running for almost a year now so I wonder what went wrong with this one? I have a new resister I'm going to install with all new wiring do you guys have any ideas as to what could have happened so I can fix it?

Hard to say what might of gone wrong. Maybe a bad solder joint or shorter length heater element causing more heat output.

Quite simple construction so I wouldn't worry to much.

Cool I was hoping it would be something simple. Gotta remember after I had 2 other smokers fail HARD CORE with 1 catching fire I tend to worry. :haha:

I've really tested the tarr 2 smoker, had it running on 11.1v lipo for 30 minutes. Even did 2 7.4v lipo in series (14.8v) @)

Another thought is maybe it ran out of oil so over heated?

I haven't run mine too long but they seem overall very solid. If you are concerned about any melting though the Mark 1 is all metal so no melting or burning ever!

Ian, nope I had just put 2 eye droppers full of megasteam into it before the 20 min run. I know these things are real good as witnessed in my King Tiger, I've run it for 3 hours straight before with the Tarr Mark II pumping out smoke the whole time so I know how they're supposed to be.

I'm gonna re-build it with a new resister, wick, and wiring this evening I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

It wasn't the first time I had used this smoke unit so I know it wasn't dry. Now was the heating element too close to the lid? Don't know didn't have time to screw with it tonight but I'll check it tomorrow.
