atc- I know you have pretty much finished the rear of you build but I thought I'd send you a pic that shows the complete rear of one currently in use that was on training maneuvers. It has the rear mud scrapers and rear side inspection swing out panels removed.
Note the little cable cover on the upper portion on the left side between the taillight armor and the grill section. Also the exhaust diverter mount ( the square frame piece HL wants you to put in the center around the exhaust grill ) is not there. It is not there in most photos of the real tank.

I also read something in janes about the possibility of going back to a smaller UAAPU to give longer main engine off run time then batteries alone but it was dated 2007 so I doubt that is still being considered as the last group of upgraded v2's were completed in 2014 by all accounts I could find.

OMG THANK YOU GREENGIANT FOR THE PICTURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been having a hard time finding such a pic. I found one for the right side where the tank-infantry phone was (it's in someone's Photobucket album, link is in the other computer), but couldn't find a decent photo for the left rear side. This solves that issue. Thanks also for pointing out the square thingy around the exhaust. I haven't noticed its absence in the pix I have. I'll go check later the v2 pix I have if some have that square thingy installed as well. :)

PS

The v2 in the Photobucket album I saw had the scrapers and rear skirts installed. I remember asking some M1 tankers on the net about the rear skirt panels and was told that these are sometimes removed in the field because they get damaged easily. I noticed though that the rear skirt panels are often out in temperate regions where there's lots of mud, but usually are retained in the desert. I'm now thinking of removing mine since it'll be in NATO 3-colour scheme. Hmmmm....

BTW, is that cable cover rounded in profile? Looks rounded and not angled. I don't recall having styrene tubing or rod of that size. Then, mebbe the stalk of a Q-tip might do.... Hmmmmm....

Looks round with some kind of mounts for something on each end. Have seen it on angled pics of v2's in in use desert colors but you can't really see it well on those. Especially the things that look like mounting brackets. I've been trying to find pics of those delivered to Graf in Germany last year as prepositioned stock (I think there were 60 in total) that show the rear end but the ones I've seen so far are still in their shipped configuration with the extra bustle rack still folded up and no loaders see thru machine gun guards installed yet.
It's surprising how hard it is to find pics of something that has been in use for so many years that even the national guard has them.
Will keep looking though.
Researching the Abrams is a time consuming project the newer the model is your looking for. One of the sites I clicked on that was supposed to be about the v2 version even had one of those fake virus warnings on it that won't let you leave the page. So you have to shut down and restart your computer to get rid of it then start your search all over again. I'm still looking for more pictures though.

Been wondering about that part...have seen photos of some M1s with it on...but only when covered by that protective cage...the ones without the cage don't seem to have it...left mine off...didn't plug the holes left just in case I find more info on how it should be properly mounted...because it's dang ugly the way it comes :haha:

When Sassgrunt saw our builds ...he sent me this link to browse through http://olivier.carneau.free.fr/gb_version/index.htmit's ok...but I found some of the same photos I have on my thread...the ones you told me were of the earlier V1 ...still not bad for general research though :D

ALPHA On mine I cut the sides off and put them in the holes then cut the bottoms of them to end where the grill ends and the tops at an angle that matches the grill door and filled it in so it looks like its part of the center grill. Isn't the way they really look without it but close enough for me and I no longer have the holes.
this pic from the site you provided the link to shows how the grills look without that piece and they are the same on v1. may redo mine now to get the right side more correct.

atc check out that link it really has a mass of really good pictures of just the v2, better then any other I've found.

Here's one that clearly shows that piece on the left side. Its square.

Awesome! Will check it out later at home. :)

My next job on the tank will be the driver's hatch. I'd like toove the switch to that area and so will make it swivel like yours, greengiant. Also helps make me mark the uncovered area for the anti-slip. Was too tired last night to work on it. Might go back to it in the coming weekend instead.

If you put the switch there you will have a hard time reaching it and will also have to fabricate something to keep it attached to the lower hull if you separate the upper and lower hulls to do any work in the inside.
I suggest that the way I did mine is the best place to put it to get it off the tanks bottom and it can't be seen unless you tip the tank on its side or back. Take a look at my build as its really quite easy to do.
And with no switch in the hatch you can put a driver in there or at least the head and part of a driver that can be seen when the hatch is opened and removed when you close the hatch.
