2.4ghz conversion?

Post by Jnewboy »

As some of you know I am working on a Henglong KingTiger but I am not happy with its range.

My WSN Tiger I has a 2.4ghz transmitter and is much better.

Is it possible to convert all my tanks to 2.4ghz? if so how? what is the best source for the parts and are there any good tutorial videos or build threads?

Thanks!

Do it ...you will be happy...told you about the conversion on your other internal antenna post...wouldn't go with the Wsn...different operating commands

Jnewboy, if you want to stick with Heng Long you can get their 2.4Ghz upgrade kit like this:

They pop up once in a while in the forum as well. I sold two sets last year myself.

So with that controler I will be able to control any Henglong tank with a 2.4ghz chip inside? Im trying to understand exactly how this all works. I understand the "crystal" thing with 27mhz stuff but how does 2.4Ghz work? no crystal?? Im very confused. :eh:

The short answer is yes, as long as you have the same version of the 2.4Ghz radio and receivers in all the tanks. I think Heng Long has 3 different versions for their 2.4Ghz set-up right now, The 1st version is basically an RX-18 (Their 27 Mhz version) with 2.4Ghz frequency, 2nd version has the little antenna, and the 3rd version has the smoke and volume control moved to the radio. ALPHA can tellyou all about it.

In terms of switching between tanks, you just need to bind the receiver/tank with the radio and then you can control the tank. Taigen also has their own 2.4Ghz and it is less confusing since there is only one version:

Thanks Michael! I understand that some of my questions aren't very interesting; many of you are far beyond me in this hobby as far as knowledge of R/C electronics. Thanks for baring with me!

How do you "bind the receiver and tank"?

Also what part do I need to put in all my 27mhz tanks to make them respond to this 2.4ghz controller?

For the Heng Long set, you press the start key on the radio and the bind button on the tank at the same time after powering both of them on. You will need a new MFU (i.e. 2.4Ghz version of RX-18) for each of your tank, but you technically only need one radio to control them all (not all at the same time obviously).

For the Taigen set, the MFU by default always look for a radio to bind to when you power it up, so if you want to switch tanks you just need to power up the radio in bind mode (One of the toggle switch on the radio).

Both of the kit I listed come with the radio and one MFU. You can buy additional MFU separately for each of your tank.

This is great! Thanks!! 8)

What button do you press on the tank to bind it?

What is the best place to buy just the MFU boards?

Also is there a controller made that can change frequencies so that you can opperate more than one tank at a time with out having to bind each one each time?

For the 2.4Gh tanks they come with a button that is connected up to the old 28Mhz controller. I have seen it inside the battery compartment but you can really put it anywhere you want.

Both Welsh Dragon and IMEX sell the 2.4Ghz controller separately.

In terms of controlling different tanks with one controller without binding, you are now talking about some serious equipment. Basically what you want is model matching which is only available on some of the newer hobby grade radios, and definitely cannot be done on the Taigen or the Heng Long 2.4Ghz. I have use Turnigy 9XR which will do model matching, and so will the Walkera Devo series.

Here is the video I did a while ago showing model matching and switching between controlling two different tanks with a single controller:
