I entirely agree about different skills for brush painting but figures and small stuff are a different kettle of fish, your not trying to get the consistent finish on large flat areas you are on a tank. I brush painted my first rc tank and IMO it's not worth it if you have an airbrush as well. Tbh I find the Vallejo paint much better for brush painting than Tamiya (which I suppose are closer to the model air series).

Good Morning,
SchwerePanzer, thanks for the link to the product. I can see where this would be very useful. I recall one of the best Panther builds on the Forum here, the builder used a similar system to do the paintwork.
regards,

Thanks to all for their input. Some of the hard edge camo schemes I've seen done by Forum members are beyond fantastic and, if done, by hand, are even more remarkable, but my sense is that most are done by air brushing.

If I understand the process correctly, the base coat is sprayed on first. Whatever masking product is used (silly putty, tape, Blu-Tac, other) is then applied in such a way that its purpose is to preserve the base color. The mask is left in place and the second color is then sprayed overall (thus preserving the base color). If a third color is to be applied, additional mask is then applied and the entire model (where you want the three colors) is again sprayed overall with the third color. This third color spray covers the preceding two masks. This may sound intuitive, but in reality I have to admit to some difficulty in visualizing the end result that might be obtained with all the masking product covering a good portion of the model, especially with the very different style tri-camo schemes used by (German) tanks toward the end of the war.

It depends on the type of camouflage and if you're chipping the layers sequentially. The king Tiger I'm being terrible at finishing I did each colour in turn otherwise the finish wouldn't be like the real thing and it would have been a pain to chip.

I have been reading all the contributions from people I look up to when it comes to painting Armour,
I have been waiting for someone to mention the most obvious mask when needing a hard line between colours.
"FRISK FILM"
For those not familier with it,It is a low adhesive film that you cut to the shape you want shielding,
I have mentioned before my second interest, Building large scale R/C historic Aircraft, I would never think of painting any of my aircraft without using "FRISK FILM"
http://www.westdesignproducts.co.uk
is where I bought mine, go to the manufacturers menu and click on "SIMAIR" then scroll down.
try it you won't be disappointed  shaun

I dare Differ Bill...guys in Japan have used Tamiya for decades...it's the reason Tamiya has some of the best brushes ....it's all in the technique (JAPAN is well known for their brush work on just about everything ...it's a heritage...techniques sometimes handed down through a family )..really....I'm not yanking your chain :D

FRISKET PAPER :O ...Good Stuff...kind of a waste for broad schemes....thin cardboard and an airbrush could give a similar effect ...personally reusable "SILLY PUTTY " is tops :D
