Metric Drill Bits Help Needed

Post by daviddunlop »

Hello Gentlemen.

For a country that went metric a good many years ago, I am having a heck of a time trying to find a local supplier for small size metric drill bit sets here in Canada.

Switching to Plan B...the Internet...I found a supplier for the following set at $35.00 plus shipping:

This Carbide Drill Bit Set contains 1ea. of the following Metric sizes; .60mm, .70mm, .80mm, .85mm, .90mm, 1.00mm, 1.10mm, 1.15mm, 1.20mm, 1.25mm, 1.30mm, 1.35mm, 1.45mm, 1.50mm, 1.55mm, 1.60mm, 1.65mm, 1.70mm, 1.75mm, 1.80mm, 1.90mm, 2.00mm, 2.10mm, 2.15mm, and 2.30mm.

All these Drill Bits are made of Tungsten Carbide. The over all length is 1.50". The shanks have a diameter of .1250 and all have identification rings on them.

For those of you with experience in metric bits and reworking 1:16 scale tanks, does this seem like a good set (size range wise), or should I be looking for something else? Most of the work with them would be on a bench top drill press.

Thanks,

David

Hi David,

I suppose it all depends what you will be using them for. ie: drilling into metal or plastic or both.
Can you give some info as to the intended purpose for the drill bits?

Cheers

Hi David there is alot of choice out there but one thing to remember is that most drill chucks will not hold a very small drill they wont close up and clamp it so the ones you have shown seem to be a good answer a little expencive take a look at the price of drills here http://www.rdgtools.co.uk/acatalog/DRILL_SETS.html

they dont have large shanks and you have to check them with a micrometer and when your using them in a stand drill you have to use a pin vise

regards pete

this is where I go for my drills and cutters its about 11 miles from me

Thanks for the feedback, chaps.

I hadn't thought of the usage, John, but suspect 90 plus percent of the time I would be working with plastics or woods, and a small part of the time thin metal sheet like aluminum or brass. There is a chance as well for a limited amount of work on cast zinc, but that would be more along the lines of a slight enlargement of a preexisting hole rather than cold starting a new hole.

Hope this makes sense.

Hello David,

I can't imagine non of the bigger chain stores would not have a metric drill set.For just hobby work they don't have to be super high quality.I know here for U.S. drill sets in 1/64 increments from 1/64 to 1/2 inch you can buy cheap sets for 20 to 28 dollars  and that gives a guy a big selection of bits.
In a set like this there are 29 drill bits, and that covers a lot of jobs most guys would tackle. These are for drilling metal or anything also softer than metal. Most of the bigger stores cary standard or metric sets here.

A cheap source for tools here is " Harborfreight.com" .Don't know if you have them in Canada,or if they ship to Canada and what it would cost to do so.
I thought they would sell a set of metric drill bits, but didn't see any. They do sell a very cheap 60 piece numbered set of drill bits from sizes 1 through 60 gauge which if you use a chart would shurley have a size to match up and bore a metric size number of holes.(hope that makes sense) that set sells for $9.99 dollars---pretty cheap for 60 bits.---most likely made in China but some of the cheap ones will fool a guy and work pretty good.
don't know if this will help you,but I tried----- ;D ;D

Archimedes drill and a 20 piece bit set. It copes with brass sheet/plastic easily and the drill bit sizes seem just right for 1:16 modelling.
