Ive been making ammo boxes for my tanks

Post by Busymodeler »

Hello fellow tank builders,

It's been a while since I've been on, so I thought I's show you what I've been doing (apart from working on my Tiger and T34).

I just wanted to show you the ammo boxes I've been working on for my tanks, all in 1/16th scale. I have now made a few, though they are currently all German, but I want to make some for my Russian KV and T34/85. Currently I'm still researching them. Getting dimensions that are reliable can be blasted tricky, even on the internet. If any of you have any feedback on my boxes; inaccuracies or whatever, I'd love to here it. I'm pretty sure they're very close, but maybe you have better sources than I could find.

Here is the group shot of them all. They are a varied lot and at the moment in various stages of finish.

    2cm Flak.30 / 38

    8.8cm Kw.K.36 (Tiger 1)

I used plastic card stock and scribbed the timber lines with the back of a craft knife. Scribbing as straight as I could, but not pressing hard, as the blade tends to gouge and also move off in an unplanned trajectory.

The results were pretty good I thought. The lines needed to take washes well, making it look like timber with not too much effort.

When gluing and keeping things square I used on a small set square. I didn't want sloping sides.
I followed photo references to have the same construction as the originals I found. Unfortunately I just couldn't manage to try and make dovetail joints like some of the boxes. I figured in 1/16 not many would notice that detail.

Once completely dry they were washed and given an undercoat. Then began the painting and washes. I haven't gotten to detailed with the paintwork yet. I want to add the writting and maybe some paper labels. It may help to look less toy like.

Soon I hope to add more pics of when I have add the writing and the paper stickers.
I hope you like them, I'll post soon with the progress.

Cheers
Dieter

Good afternoon,
Doesn't look very toy-like to me. These are beautifully and exactingly done and would be a great add on to any tank or diorama!
regards,
Painless

Hey Dieter,

I think they look pretty good too! :D

Another little trick I use after doing the deep scoring for the grain you may find the parts in between are too smooth so take 80 grit sandpaper and go in one direction down the grain and it makes it look even more wood like...

Thanks for the encouraging words. Dgsselkirk, that sounds a nice effect with the 80 grit. I have done that on some boxes but I will probably do that more often.
