Good morning,
This scenario is familiar to me. As Michael noted, it is a great time to add the Idlers and suspension arms in metal from Tank Army. You might even consider replacing the next road wheel in line with a metal wheel and arm. The weight up front helps loads with the Pershing's tendency to ride high in the front in grass, etc.
Regards,
Painless

Not much of a MacGyver this time. The only reason I responded so quickly is because my Pershing happens to be sitting on the work bench for a re-wiring after my custom wiring burnt a Clark board.......

As Painless said, my Pershing was always a bit of a toy among the other tanks, but after upgrading to the metal suspension arms and road wheels it is a bit of a world beater now. It gives it quite a bit of weight to the chassis and much better driving. The only disappointment is that the metal wheels has hard plastic rim rather than softer rubber like the Leo ones.

To be fair, basically all the Clark board that I have burnt over the years gave me warning beforehand. I think it has some sort of voltage regulator to at least hold off an imminent burnt. Just a note, whenever you power up the Clark and it starts making either a clicking noise or a low consistent hum from the speaker you need to shutdown right away.

Ideally should put in a fuse, but I have no idea what the typical power draw is. It will definitely prevent it from shorting when you power up, but the moment there is any draw it could blow the fuse too. Oh well. At least Clark fixes them for cheap.

Ive just finished my Hen pong Pershing upgrade and I replaced the original hard wheels with a full Tamiya set of wheels and tyres and it runs a treat. I can post a picture but it wont show you much.

You just snip off the moulded hub nut on the old wheel
This gives you access to the screw. Keep these you will need them later.Take off the old wheels and bin.
Put a 3x 1mm washers on the axle OR a tamiya metal bearing. This is a spacer that places the wheel in the right place.
Drop on the new rear Tamiya wheel ,tyre and bearing ( use the sealed ball races they are a must or this wont work, they fit tight on the axle stopping the wheel moving about)
Put the old screw back on the axle, it fits the Tamiya wheel nicely.
Screw on the front wheel.

Your done. Nice rubber tyres.!

Repeat nine more times ( I think? )

Mine goes like a rocket ( no pun intended) so it does work. The sealed ball races are a must. If you use the stock non ball raced bearings it wont work. It all just sticks together and sits there looking sorry for itself.

I can post pics if you want?

Interesting Rocketman...... Never thought about that. I got the metal wheels already so it would be a waste, but I wonder if I can put the Tamiya rubber tires on the Heng Long after market metal bogies............ Might just give that a go.

Might need a bit of filing, I had to shave down the plastic arms a tad to get the bearings on. This is why its so important to use the ball race bearings not the solid ones. The inner face is push fit held against the axle whilst the outer race face lets the wheel spin. The fact that its tension fit also helps the wheel to stay put and doesn't mean your relying on a little screw to hold the wheel on.

Should work though. :)

So the metal wheels have....metal molded on tyres? Thats just odd!

Rocketman, I meant just putting on the Tamiya rubber tyres on the Heng Long metal bogies. The Heng Long metal one comes with hard rubber rims that I hate, not like the new Leo which is soft rubber tyres. I already ordered a set of the rubber tyres from Jason and keeping my fingers cross. I think I am okay as long as the Heng Long metal ones are slight larger as I can stretch the rubber tyres. if it is too small than I might be SOL.

Its only $7 USD and $7 shipping so no big lost if it doesn't fit. If it does I will be a very happy man. If it does, I might even try the Tamiya Leo rubber tyres on my Heng Long ZTZ........
