Drivers hatch configuration - Cromwell Tank mk IV

Post by macman »

Need some Cromwell expertise.....

I have a library of Cromwell MKIV/VII pictures and when I've come to complete the drivers hatch on my scratch build I've noticed the configuration varys. I have pics of 3 Cromwell IV' of the Welsh guards will three different configurations(1,2 and 3 on my sketch).

My main picture I'm working to shows config 3 and in a interview on the 'Tanks' series on Sky, a driver described 3 as a way of cooling the inside - if you open the back hatch it forced air down into the tanks as they were driving along. For this reason I like the idea of config 3, but I have more pictures showing 1 and 2

Anybody known the reason for the different configurations and which was the most common for a MkIV and VII?

I was really hoping that I could find an answer for you in this book I bought for my build: http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/2816202379 ... =82&chn=ps (And, I have had the book for awhile and didn't pay anywhere near what this guy is asking for it). But, it doesn't say anything about your question that I could find in it. The photos and overhead drawings that show the hatches are generic (not identified as a specific type), and show the 2/3 size that you drew as number 2. There are several side view drawings that show the different types of vehicle stowage, but they don't show the roof details - darn it!

PM me if you want me to make some copies of something for you. -Mike

Thanks Mike,
Ironically I ordered the very same book a few days ago, for £10, it arrived this morning!
I too was hoping for a few pointers, great book with loads of detail - Just not on the hatches.
What I really liked was the details on the aux fuel tank - a pleasant surprise to find. Apparently all the recon tanks were fitted with these but pictures of tanks carrying them are few and far between.
Thanks for the feedback
Andrew

There is also this book on the Cromwell Mk VIII. Cheaper, and has a lot of very good detail photos and drawings.
