Tigers without lights
I was watching a video of Tiger 131 and noticed it didn't have a forward facing headlight. Then I saw others without any lights. Can someone tell me, were they manufactured this way or just lost their lights in battle?

Re: Tigers without lights
The headlights could be unscrewed and stored inside the tank (upside down, screwed into sockets in the ceiling). This of course was recommended if you were in battle.
Tiger 131 was not only missing its headlights, it was missing the metal socket on the hull top. There's no obvious explanation for this.

I guess if the gun is full depressed and the turret rotates the gun would take out the lights.

Which in turn would make the crew depressed, I'm sure.billpe wrote:I guess if the gun is full depressed and the turret rotates the gun would take out the lights.

If you are traveling at night in a convoy you only need the first vehicle to use headlights the rest would follow the tail lights of the vehicle in front its safer from air attacks or enemy reporting on your movements.

Re: Tigers without lights
Good Morning,
It's possible that the headlight mounts were damaged by the same strike that disabled the tank back in Tunisia(?) Maybe they were removed by the Allies for repair and never replaced. There should be some photos of the tank available right after and before capture to verify.

Painless

There is only one photo of the tank with its German crew.
It has no headlight bases.

No, I don't believe that any Tigers rolled out of the factory without headlights. Why would they?

Re: Tigers without lights
Knowing how hard pressed the German Army was for materials towards the end of the war, the possibility existed in my opinion. Thanks for the replies.DavidByrden wrote:No, I don't believe that any Tigers rolled out of the factory without headlights. Why would they?
