spongehoobtank82 wrote:Only used a filter on the tiger Herman, it's the first time I have done one, the camo finish looked abit to stark compared to the base coat so I just mix in a 10% dark brown and water it came out better than I thought for such a simple technique and brushing it on, then just shared over the top with the airbrush in Black
Good morning spongehoobtank82, I'm not much of a painter, can you tell me what you mean by a filter?
All of your tanks look great. Thank you

A filter is a way of adjusting the colours depth and tone using a very thin layer of colour over a main colour. For instance you might use a very thin acrylic, oil or enamel ochre over dark yellow to give it a richness and depth without changing the underlying tone. It can also be used to help blend or fade layers beneath like sponghoobtank has done. The basic idea is not to have the paint thick enough that the filter colour is seen independently, but affect the layer it's covering.

Basically jtracks it's like an all over wash, on the tiger I uncoated with red oxide primer, sprayed on the base coat (Tamiya dark yellow) the airbrushed the camo in red brown and Oliver green. Now the filter bit I just used about 10% Tamiya brown to water and used a large soft brush to apply it all over, this will help tone down the paint, there are lots of other methods too, I like this one as it gives a great matt/ dusty effect, then I high light edges of panels/ components with dark colours and an airbrush looking on you tube that's a good place for weathering/ painting tips and on this forum, your best bet is just having a practice on some thing to see how it works for you, and I highly recommend an airbrush there alot easier to use than you think and get great results with them. Anyway I hope this waffle helps, do you think a step by step guide would help people? I did think of doing one but thought everyone would just chime in and go ' no do it this way' or ' try this' people are very critical when it comes to arty stuff like painting! Leigh (and thanks for liking them dude)

OK, thank you for the explanation. So it's a thin wash and in this instance you applied it with a brush. I have a Tiger that I use for experiments, I'll give some painting a try. Thanks again for the lesson guys.

Can I just ask if the yellow band on the barrel was a transfer? Looks really good wouldn't mind it on my late tiger when it arrives
