Modified Heng long recoil

Post by YHR »

For those of you that don't frequent RCuniverse, here is a link to my latest project.  Modifiying a Heng Long recoil and installing it in My Firefly.

I will be doing a how to over on RCuniverse, hopefully this week, if anyone is interested.

Well sure I can.  I love all these forums, but man proliferation of tank forums makes it tough to keep up on them all.

Hi Guys I think he is using the new recoil unit out of the Stug the mod is allready on here I posted it in December http://www.rctankwarfare.com/Forums/ind ... 247.0.html  He has made it easyer to set up with reduced voltage something I didnt do and it does slow the recoil down will have to find out what size resistor he has used.then I can add it to mine to slow it down .wonder if he has used the new gun elevation motor as well .would be nice to have a full build then can add any mods to mine .

While I was fitting this into my Kitbashed stug, I discovered it was going to be necessary to trim the  ridge of plastic off the back of the gun.  This ridge allows the new recoil system to be used with the old elevation cam.  As I am using the new Heng Long elevation unit as well, I could easily trim this off the gun.  Once I had this done I realized there is very little difference between the front or the back of this gun.  So I inserted the bbl through the back,  Guess what.  NO mod is required to the gun.  iT works fine with spring back and slower gear return,!!!!!!!.  All you need to do id add a contact switch to shut off the power to the motor when it reaches full extension, and slow down the motor with resistors.

As far as the resistors go, I have them shrink wrapped and can't tell.  I harvested them off a fried HL ESC though.  I think they were 22 ohms, I will check when I do the next one.  I twisted two in parallal to allow enough current though to the motor.  I do the same thing to slow the turret speed down as well

Yes this idea was harvested from RCuniverse, I just couldn't remember, who wrote it.  Looks like  971 wright deserves the credit.  I modified it with resistors to get a better looking recoil.  Very simple, and even simplier, now that all you have to do is trim the ridge off and run the bbl through the back!!!!!!  Makes you wonder why HL didn't design it this way in the first place.  Best $11.00 recoil unit on the market.  Another HL value item worth having.

It is in the hints and tips section

I Agree with you YHR the asiatam recoil units are a real pain have 2 off them had nothing but trouble with both the microswitches are very prone to sticking and breaking had to change them for ones I bought from Maplins , have also modified a bb gun to recoil this works well but does involve a bit off work ,Have also built a recoiling firing BB gun this took me 2 months work and still have problems with BB feed, all in all have built or modified all types of Heng Long recoil units that can be bought or modified and I will never buy another asiatam type they are not reliable the only recoil unit I would spend money on is the type fitted to the Stug also the elevation unit in the Stug is very good and much smaller than the standard one fitted in most Heng long tanks hope this helps you guys out there who were thinking of buying a recoil unit .

Hi YHR just seen your write up on RCU wow that is a simple idea never thought of doing it this way (THEY DO SAY THE BEST IDEAS ARE THE SIMPLE ONES )The microswitch is about the only thing that is the same I wired mine slightly differant to yours the extra negative going to the battery .Nice one I thought you had done similar to mine ,I had a problem with the clutch on mine if you have the clutch slipping the easy fix is to glue it .

regards pete

P.S would have replyed on RCU but Im one of those they banned
