Smoke Units

Post by Hotlipz »

Hiya,
I'm fairly new to RC tanks and have recently purchased a second hand HL Tiger. I am in the process of making some repairs and modifications before painting and I a have now got around to the smoke unit. My question is - are these units worth using? I am thinking in terms of the maintenance. The current unit has a faulty switch so does not work but I am wanting to know if it's worth fixing. I do like to go all out with my models but only if the end result is worthwhile.

Hi, I am probably the worst person to ask about smoke units, My view is simple, a properly serviced Tank engine will not, once the engine is warm, emit smoke, if you are laying in wait hull down, the last thing you need is a smoking tank engine, If you really want to know more about smoke units then scroll down to the "Electronic" section and click on "Smokers" shaun
I think I am about to upset someone :haha:

A diesel will smoke on start or after a period of idle & then throttle up, but a petrol engine, in fairly new condition like most tank engines realistically were taking the actual time in service were, if it smokes- its poorly assembled, or its very poorly tuned.

I was very close to a gent back in my old country that drove trucks in the Pacific during the war. He told me that in the entire time he was in service, he NEVER was in charge of ANY form of transport that recieved oil & filter changes. Not ever.
22 drums of aviation fuel got him a case of Scotch..............as long as he included the truck, and that was with the tailgate down.

If it stopped, he made every effort to transfer the cargo, but the transport was left ............
I gave him a GMC 6X6 Grille , restored, and mounted for his 85th bithday, it was the only thing I could think of that would mean anything to him.
He shook my hand & cried, without a word said.

I think he was hoping for a case of scotch, Herman

I'm glad my T34 is equipped with a smoker. They don't put out clouds of smoke anyway - it's usually quite a subtle thing and you can turn it off if it doesn't suit you. I think for the sake of a switch I'd say give it a try! 8)
Tamiya King Tiger (no options)
Taigen Full Metal T34 (winter)
Heng Long Challenger II (European camo')
Tamiya Tiger I full options (still in the box)

Herman Good day sir, I smiled at your comment on diesel engines because just the other day a "DISCOVERY" TV show all about the KURSK campaign stated with great authority the advantage the Tiger 1 had over other German armour was in being fitted with a diesel engine, this fallacy has been going the rounds since WW2 and I can only assume it is because it's engine was fuel injected and very few people even vehicle mechanics had seen fuel injected petrol engines at that time, so assumed they were diesel, but to expand on your point, Tanks were not built to last long (LOOK AT A T34) which is why the allies had the edge in that they were built without frills just to do a job,so they could churn them out in tens of thousands, Russian tanks were very crudely finished but they were as good as its German equivilent which most people agree were over engineered as you are about to discover with your Panther. :haha: take care. shaun

Yep, I was told a truck was 'lifed' at 22hours, a GpWv(Jeep)at 6, and the Sherman '76 at 2 days.
This would explain the production numbers, or at least the target production numbers at the time.

Just thank God that the eastern and western allies never used Cummins engines.............. :eh:

Greetings Hotlipz ....Faulty switch on your smoker??? It's worth it....just do a quick jump and bypass the switch...pull the plug out of your RX...make a set of jumper wires...hook the positive to one of the resistors that is sticking out from the smoker board...then touch the neg to the other resistor...this will make a direct hook up...then you will know if it works or not
If it works...you have two choices...replace the switch...or upgrade to the new gen 2.4 gig rig....that RX bypasses the switch all together...and you will be able to turn the smoker on or off remotely :D
