Movie Kajaki

Post by wibblywobbly »

I was planning to see Fury last night, as it was the last day it was on at the local cinema complex, unfortunately the only showing started at 11:30pm...and the lady friend I was with didn't want to stay up that late as she had to go to work today.

We opted for Kajaki, and I have to say that I was glad I watched it. Highly recommended true story of British lads on a mountain top overlooking a valley. Barren and desolate, but a bit of a breeze as they were out of range of small arms fire. They spot some Taliban extorting money from the locals and decide to go down and take them out, and walk straight into a minefield that I think was left by the Russians.

What follows is harrowing. It's one of those down to earth movies, no CGI, no annoying music, and no big name stars, just showing what they endured, and how a group of lads stumble into a situation that has terrible consequences.

Highly recommended.

For those that have Netflix, I also recommend Restrepo, which is a US based documentary in which a film maker spends a year with troops in the most dangerous valley in Afghanistan. This one is all real life footage.

Lebanon is an entire movie filmed inside the turret of an Israeli tank, reminded me of Das Boot, it's all a bit surreal, but a good watch.

Those in the US may be familiar with the series Bomb Patrol, a 17 part fly on the wall documentary following the Bomb Disposal guys. It's quite addictive, and apart from the US style of making up contrived arguments amongst the teams etc to add to the 'entertainment value', the real footage of them going out to deal with IED's, running into ambushes etc is good viewing.
