How do I make the Heng Long Smoke Unit work..?!

Post by tanks_for_the_memory »

Now I know there has been a fair amount of discussion on this topic over the years, but I thought I would look for some up-to-date wisdom.

I recently turned my attention back to the smoker on my Normandy Tiger 1 build. It's the one that came with an RX18, metal-tracked Heng Long model and looks exactly the same as all the ones on ebay. So I suppose it's the more recent type.

I reattached the tubes and put a little smoke oil in each one. Turned it on and it rattled away quite happily. I could even see the oil being drawn back towards the unit. It all looks and sounds fine.

But no smoke.

It probably hasn't been oiled and turned on for the best part of a year or more and to be honest, with several other tanks in the house, I can't even be sure it ever worked.

Does anyone have any tips / advice?

I really don't want to upgrade to some sort of exotic 'super smoker' and I'm not actually that fussed about how much smoke I get - just a bit would be wonderful.

I would also like to know if anyone has tried any of these new-fangled smoke oils, eg: Mega Steam

Greetings Tank... Sounds like you might have too much smoke fluid in your smoker....or...the element is toast.....best way I found to check it is to remove it and get a set of contact wires with alligator clips and hook the smoker to a battery direct...the higher the voltage of the battery the better...I've done it will 11.1s ... not too long though....because if the element is good...that sucker will smoke almost immediately 8O
I have found it's a good way to test the smoker...even proportionals ;)

Good Luck Sir

Mega Steam is AWESOME stuff! I have been using it in my Tiger and it works fantastic. The no scent one smells like blown out birthday candles but not but, I talked to the gentleman who makes the stuff and he said its because it is made for model trains which have a smoke unit that runs on 12 to 18 volts but our tanks only get 7.2 volts at very best so it burns slower which is why you can smell it. You'll like it I'm sure.
