Some different approach's there but it would seem for now the cheapest/simplest idea is the MP3 player, i have recently opened the hatches on the sherman so i should be able to make the MP3 player more accessable, also you can now buy MP3 players with built in speakers which might be an option if they are loud enough and it would save on space, looking at the sound generators it does not look like they would be loud enough or play long enough, elmod does look like the best way to go but for that price i could get more tanks
Re The Elmod, yes you can play multi tracks at the same time, during its 'resurrection phase' mine is playing 60 secs of Panzerlied, the engine sounds and the gun fire sound. It would also play the machine gun sound as well if I pressed the button.
Integrating the Elmod Blaster into a Tamiya unit is not going to be an easy task, pcb design and signal outputs are going to be different to the HL and Elmod boards.
The Darkith unit will play up to 20 secs of a sound file, it seems to be an aftermarket mini-recorder/amplifier that he adds to his kits, as they come pre-assembled with a link to a non-Darkith site. This needs a 5 wire set-up to the Darkith main board, plus a link to the HL RX board. 5v power, plus hit/destroy sound leads, plus led hit/fire detectors. The sound quality is iffy, as it has to be manually recorded from speakers onto the chip, with the sound board removed from the tank. Details are on the Darkith site.
Rigging up a servo to a spare channel, and using that to operate a sliding on/off switch on a mini-mp3 player would work, but skip track and rewind may be a problem.
Maplins sell DIY kits that do this sort of thing, I have always wondered whether one of their amplifier pcb's would work in my tanks?
Have a look at the failsafe route , I used them whem I was racing ic boats we fitted them to the throttle servo so that if signal was lost or the tx switched off it would shut off the throttle to stop the boat you could use this to control the mp3 player from the hand set. It is so easy

I see where your coming from oddball and it would be cheap and easy to fit, so do you know of any nice little servo's on the market that would do the job
If space is an issue and you dont use the mp3 out of the tank, have you tried opening the mp3 player and ditching the casing? Im currently doing this with an Nam era M113 to get some 60's tunes into it. Havent decided how to mount it in the hull yet though.
Good idea Crispy, i think the biggest available space in a Tammy Sherman is in the upper hull under where the driver hatches are, this is where i am planning to put the mp3 player, the last time i did it i had the mp3 player on the stowage shelf on the rear of the tank, i sprayed it olive drab and wrapped it in some fine camo netting and i mounted the speaker on the inside of the turret under the radio operators hatch, then i could open the hatch and here the music better What sort of speaker are you using for your music.
My local Tesco's sells those mini loud speakers for walkmans (showing my age there ::)) which are perfect, they have a jack plug so will fit straight it. Think they were under £4. I just need to crack open the case and build a platform to hold them inside the APC. Im lucky as there's quite a lot of room inside it.
Got some speakers from a walkman, removed them from the cases and then re-soldered the wires to the speakers, plugged it in and i can hardly hear anything the volume is set on full and sound is coming out of both speakers but just very quiet, somebody said to me about the wires on the jack plug being different to normal wires is this true and do i need to do something else i have tried it with two different mp3 players and still the same, any ideas
