Sov's Tiger Build

I was alerted to a potential problem by TFTM about how high the turret sits on HL style Tigers.

Sure enough once I test fit the pieces the turret was WAYYYYY too high off my deck. It was about 3-4mm off the desk surface! I brought it down to about 1mm, or maybe a bit less than 1mm. Nothing fancy in the pic but you can see the decreased deck height. Sorry I didn't take a "before" picture.

Finished my "rivets" on the Rommel box all around. Bought the drill chuck for my dremel and the job took 5 minutes instead of the hours it would have by hand drill, ug. I'm not amazed at the poor line they form but at this scale it shouldn't be too noticeable, especially once painted.

Cutting that gorgeous Aber machine gun felt criminal but the results are great. Certainly leagues ahead of an LED sticking out of that hole. Now I've gotta figure out exactly where to drill the oil holes in the barrel sleeve. Might have run into another problem. The HL style mantlet may pivot on the wrong point. Going to investigate.

There were no oil filling holes on the sleeve; in fact, the gun didn't touch that external sleeve at all. The oiled bearing was further back within the turret.



There were 3 groups of 2 screws; they held an internal rubber ring that prevented dust from working its way along the barrel. These screws were evenly angled around the sleeve, therefore 120 degrees, with one pair on the underside center line.

The mantlet was pivoted on the two lifting points that protruded out of the front sides. They were exactly in the middle of the mantlet's height, and the pivot axis intersected the gun axis.

I know, right? David's contributions here have really been one of my major guides! To think not that long ago I was content to make Tiger using a mix of early and late parts that wasn't accurate.

It's an honor to have the advice and assistance of such an expert on here!

I started on new gun pivots today. Made some really good progress but I need a trip to the hobby shop (open Tuesday) to get the finishing parts.

You, TFTM and the rest of us completely benefit from David's advice and guidance on parts and placement and version. He is a great guy who understands the line between someone trying to build a 100% accurate period Tiger and someone having fun building their own version of a Tiger. Everyone can benefit in ways great and small from his experience.

Full marks to Sov for this build, I think it will become one of those reference jobbies that others refer to constantly. I have been in this hobby for years and I am still learning from this thread.

I always swore that I would never build another Tiger as getting it 'right' is actually quite difficult. They seem to be straightforward tanks but nothing could be further from the truth, the myriad of differences between early, mid, and late and everything in between is immense. You can add field mods to the mix. Depending on what you are starting with will determine the amount of work involved, and the depth of your pockets will determine how much of it can be done.

Keep it coming, I look at the thread all the time to see what is happening.
