Playing around with some ideas. I've been stuck on trying to make rivets for the metal box. After many failures and bad ideas I heard of using micro beads countersunk as rivets. They look alright, not perfect but it's w/e. Once painted I think it'll be fine.






Playing around with scratch building that turret vent since no one makes one that's even remotely accurate. Had to cut up one of mine for the lid, drill holes, and used some washers as a base and some plasticard. It should look decent once it's finished.




Got 3 packages in the mail today, all from Canada and all from different people.

Tonight's efforts...

I'm quite happy with the vent scratch building. I ended up trashing last nights work and started over again and I'm damn glad I did.

Multiple types of plasticard formed to shape with washers and that same aftermarket lid piece. I cut a rough circle out of thin plasticard, put it on my dremel and spun it on sandpaper to make it round and the correct size, then glued to double stacked washers. Measured, marked and added all the little bits that were over sized. Once all glued bits were on solid I gently sanded and filed the parts down to size. I put little drill marks in the disk to represent the countersunk screws in the real thing.



Completed. Need to glue top lid down but I think the shape is good.



Comparison to the aftermarket part and the scratch building I did. Not even in the same league. I wonder why no one sells an accurate aftermarket vent? Two different manufacturers both sell the wrong shape.



Compare to David's pic. I may make it taller still but a third washer is just way too tall. Maybe 1/2 a washer in height using plasticard.

Trying to pick my basic colors.

The ones with the hearts are my preferred. What do you guys think? Are my color choices off? I'm only just now learning about the German paints used.

Should the tank's base coat/primer be the Yellow/Tan or another color? I've seen some of you guys use Red as a base coat/primer. I've never used my airbrush before. I'll be learning on some older beat up models before I touch the Tiger (and mess it up).

That is some beautiful work on the turret top vent. I believe that the early Tiger 1 that I am about to start has a vent fan on the turret top so I will be looking at this one again you can be sure. ;o) The colors you favor on the chart are classic armor colors for panzers. They are the same ones I used on the 'Crackerbox Palace' earlier this year. They usually go extremely well together.

I think if it's the rear vent fan behind the loader's hatch it is different in appearance from the vent in the middle of the turret. However, they both seem to use the same armored covered that I've seen in pics.

Yeah, I really like those colors on your KV-2 Painless, especially with the weathering!

I've been using light gray primer from Tamiya but am about to switch to Model Masters black to do some serious pre-shadowing. Lots of the folks on here use a dark red primer for late German armor since they do the hairspray or chipping fluid that shows the primer when weathered. Tom H. does a really good job on that on a regular basis. Thanks for the tip on the vent fan. David will correct me as I go along if I stray. ;o) Thanks! The 'Palace' was the most complex paint I have attempted to date. With an airbrush, you will do extremely well in a lot less time than me with rattle cans and brushes.
