jackalope wrote:Ok so SCREW that stupid smoker! I filled it up with other smoke fluid, it says it works with any of them, the damn thing smoked great for about 10 minutes and then BLACK smoke started pouring from the exhaust, IT WAS ON FIRE INSIDE!!! I quickly opened the tank up and ripped it out only to find it still had smoke fluid inside on it but the rope that was around the heating element had come into contact with the PVC body and caught it on fire. Thankfully I didn't lose my tank tho I did get burns on my right hand from the PVC being almost melted.

I'm gonna take its heating element, circuit board, and fan and build my own smoker.

Kinda pissed right now cause my hand hurts, my new smoker is trash and I almost lost my tank that I just spent the past 5 freakin days painting and detailing!

Thanks for the heads up where to look for tips Jarndice heading there now.
FIRE??????????????? OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!! :O ....one of my stock smokers almost got there...but I was using an 11.1 lipo to test it :haha: ...thing is the wick never went black... and the plastic absorbed the filament :D
That smoker you got is definitely not well designed

Take care of the hand buddy

So far I have had good luck with the polish guys and I like it better because it is an aluminum box and lid so no chance of a melt down of the casing. Also very reasonably priced I think. Makes enough smoke for me although it would be nice if it was proportional set up somehow...
That's how most of the ones I've seen are made... aluminum housings...kind of big..with copper fittings :D

Actually they really are not that big. I put one in my L70 no problem. Here is ebay link for pics...

Joe

Hi Joe, I emailed the guy who makes them and told him what happened so hopefully he can figure out what the problem is and fix it before anyones tank burns to the ground or a kid get seriously hurt.

So you say that smoke unit works well Kirk, is it proportional or does it just pump out a steady stream of smoke?

Ok so I got kinda mad at the thing after I found what had happened inside and I kinda pitched it across my front porch and it broke into a bunch of little pieces so there went my warranty, oh well. My hand feels fine now just needed some cold water and an ice pack but its all good. I emailed the guy but honestly I don't expect to hear a reply from him so I'm just out $60.00.

I did salvage the circuit board and heating element and may try to make my own but right now I'm gonna put my Tiger aside cause I'm so frustrated with the whole thing.

Maybe I'll try to build that acoustic smoker it looks pretty neat. As the engine sound increases so does the smoke output and no fan, sounds like a win, win to me.

Yea, that's the only drawback on the aluminum ones is they are not proportional although I'm sure someone will figure out how to make them that way sooner or later. The other thing is they run on paraffin oil which means you can run them on baby oil which is very, very, cheap! :D Also when they heat up it actually smells kinda nice!

Another solution Jack... just run a separate on/off to the stock smoker...then hood a separate battery to it... run a 8.4 or 9.6 you'll be surprised how much smoke the stock smoker will pump out ;)

UPDATE. I just received an email from the maker of the smoker and he says that mine is the only one he's ever heard of getting so hot it almost catches fire, he said they're designed to get very hot but not to the point the PVC starts to melt which is what I had happen. He has offered to replace the smoker free of charge even though I had throw it away which I was surprised at. He said he was building me a new one this morning first thing and I should have it next week and that he will give it an extra long break in test before he ships it to make double 100% sure it does not go Chernobyl go me.

What the hell I can wait another week to get a new one and if that was the 1 in a million chance it'd do that then the next one should be perfect! I'll keep you guys updated and so long as the new one behaves itself then I'd say to give em a try.

I must have a black cat following me around it seems like if something could go wrong it finds a way to go wrong for me, thats the way this whole tank build has gone doing this Tiger. Maybe I should have numbered it 666.
