Early Tiger 1 STARTING HANDLE

Post by jarndice »

I am about to paint an early Tiger 1 starting handle, I assume it had a wooden handle in which case brown or perhaps it had a metal ally handle, so aluminium, and the rest I thought in gun metal, but what is the proper scheme. :problem: shaun
I think I am about to upset someone :haha:

Hi shaun,

I think the starting handle for the Tiger had an ally handle, and would have been painted in the same base colour as the tank, so probably either dark grey or dark yellow. Jacks are the same by the way, you often see them on models depicted as bare metal, but all the pictures I have seen of originals are painted.

Hope this helps

Jarndice,
Paul is right. ;o). I remember the manual start video of the Bovington Tiger. That handle was the same dunklegelb as the rest of the tank.

Never seen one of those cranks in person...but when I look at the casting.... it reminds me of the cranks that were used for model "A"s....those in general were all metal with a rotating sleeve on the end that was also metal...custom for show cars were later fitted with hardwood for looks... ;)

Here is a video of 131 being started using the inertia system. The inertia start handle is clearly visible later in the clip after 131 has started.

This is the early 1 piece inertia handle, there is also a 2 piece one which was fitted to later Tigers.

Thank you my ever helpful friends, Paul don't talk to me about inertia starters, in my previous existence we would sometimes get the chance of a bit of freefall practice using the Army Air Corps DHC2 Beavers. because this usually happened away from the Aircraft's base, the pilot, rather than using the internal battery would "BORROW" one of us, My shoulders being about the same height as the socket for the handle I would usually get the job! So there I am winding this 9 cylinder Pratt and Whitney with the propeller just 2 feet from my shoulder and thinking well it could be worse, I once swung the prop of an Auster to get it started, that made me jump! Light aircraft are in my experience dangerous even when sitting still. :haha: shaun

It can't be a Tiger thing Alpha - I've still got a good head of hair (at 46).
