Tools ?

Hi All

In the near future, I'll be wanting to get more involved with the hobby,start some build work etc, I was wondering if you nice chaps would help me out with a list of tools I will need so I can order them in advance.

Hi Jake... there are so many tools... but I would say a good starting point of basic things would be:

xacto knife set+ saw blades
coping saw
flush cutter
Squadron putty scrapers
hand drill
pin vise
micro drills
jewelers files
paint brushes
small phillips and standard screwdrivers (as some normal ones don't fit everywhere)
emery boards
Dremel tool variable speed
once you get more advanced

Airbrush+ Compressor
Drill Press
Larger work bench
Shelves for all the tanks you will build
maybe new house....etc etc etc...........................

That's quite a list,already got all the paints etc. When you talk of the Dremel which one, I've been looking there are a few to choice from, is there a certain one you guys use. Thanks

I use the cheap dremel set from maplin, £30 with a full load of tools. Mines been going strong for the last two years.

Any version of the rotary tool is good several brands out there... I like the variable speed versions... my dremel set cost me 70 dollars US variable speed... box and lots of accessories... even has the roto cutter head attachment

It's a good tool... as you can add a flex mech to it that has a smaller hand grip... router table.. or plain ol router base to it

well worth the investment

PS. The battery powered ones are good for only small light duty stuff... get the plug in first...

By the way Jake...there are generic versions of all the tools I listed...so you don't really have to stick with name brands....

Take your time Jake ...I got most of my tools by progressive collecting .... some are over 20 yrs old

ALPHAs list is an excellent start indeed all I would add is various size HEX head spanners a few different size magnetic screwdrivers and a SOLDERING iron, You find out what you need as you go through a build, a magnifier is expensive but when doing detail work it is essential, A cutting board for those exacto blades and a decent debonder, ( I use ZAP 7) with both a fast acting SUPERGLUE and a slower glue to allow for repositioning of parts. enjoy your build but don't lose sight of why you are doing it. shaun
