MG34 Panzerschutz barrels, my work so far

Post by scalawag »

Hi all

Following on from my recent post in TFTMs fantastic mid Tiger build. I thought it would be useful to put all this in one place for you to look at.

I have been working on armoured or Panzerschutz barrel shrouds for my Panzers, so her are the results, and the parts sources I have been using.

Firstly the Hull mounted MG34. Not great pics but you can pick out most of the detail.

I used these very good brass barrel kits from Perfect Hobby:

I used the barrel shrouds, and replaced the barrel itself with a length of fibre optic from an old Toshlink cable. These are a bit fiddly to get the parts lined up but overall a very good buy.

My AA MG34s have also had the standard shrouds replaced with the Panzerschutz armoured ones.

It appears from photographs that the majority of MG34s used on AA mounts by panzer crews had the armoured shroud rather than the more usual perforated one. This would make sense as these guns were already carried on most panzers in this form for the hull and coax positions. Here are a couple of the clearer pics I have been able to find which show this.

So here are my AA mounts and MG34s with Panzerschutz barrel shrouds

The parts I used for these were the following,

basic MG34 (5 piece kit) A great kit which also allows you to model the receiver open if you wish to.

AA mount, very highly detailed as usual from Schumo

ABER panzerschutz MG34 Barrel, great detail but a solid barrel so no use for MGs with flash.

Gurtsack ammo bags, great detail on these, very good quality castings.

They have closed ones too

and ammo belts, these are great pieces. flexible but take paint well

Hope some of you found this interesting, as always comments and questions are welcomed

:haha: :haha: :haha: ....Sorry Scalawag... I'm laughing because I saw your fine work on another thread...and I also know Shaun has been lamenting over that mount on the Panzer IV turret...and came up with an alternate thread where he had finalized his installation :haha:

I think it was nice of you to make this thread for reference ... Thanks Scalawag ...and thanks for sharing your fine work

Just finished the hull MGs and thought that rather than make another different post on someone else's thread I would put this and the AA mount details all in one place.
Glad it gave you a laugh

As ever inspirational, got the ammo belts and of course as you say they do take paint well, I reluctantly sawed the barrel off an MG34 to fit the ABER barrel (where would we be without a pin vise?)it looks good, I would advise anyone doing it to keep the paint thin as the barrel shows any blemishes, once again thanks PAUL, take care. shaun

Yep, I totally agree on the paint Shaun. These had a coat of Tamiya X-10 gun metal applied with an airbrush, and then a couple of thin washes of XF-85 rubber black. The finishing touch is a very light dry brush of Revel aquacolor steel. The pistol grip is XF-1 Flat Black, and the butt stock is XF-9 Hull Red.

I too removed the barrels with some degree of trepidation. This was another reason behind buying the Jagdpanzer MG34s. Being white metal they are reasonably easy to cut and drill for the barrel swap, but still retain good detail. The schumo ones I think are the very best for detail, but being nickel silver lost wax castings the metal is much harder to work on.

Glad people are finding this thread helpful. :D

Very helpful Scalawag...much appreciated! It's hard to find most of these items here across the pond so the links to purchase are great! When I'm ready just need a buddy to consolidate the order over there to ship it here in one shot! :haha:

Hi dgsselkirk,

I'm sure a consolidated shipment could be arranged. PM me when you are ready, and let's see what we can sort out.

It's Probably the best way to do it....especially with all the reference material you included...Tips like this get lost when put on someone elses thread... Thanks again for thinking about the rest of us
