1981 Tamiya KT Clutches

Post by mdkboggle »

Hi All
I have searched for this but not got an answer, well i have not found one yet so here goes with the question.
Are the clutch housings on the old single engine kits adjustable in any way?
The tank will drive forwards and back ok in a strait line but when the turn servo is used the clutches do not seem to be right with the way they stop drive to the left or the right track.
The long black clutch arm and its servo are all ok and work fine, you can see the right or left clutch bell housing being pressed in by about 1 or 2 mm yet still the tank lacks any real steering when placed on the floor and run.
There are 4 small screws in the clutch housing and i am wondering if i should look inside for worn/damaged parts but again i do not want to pull them open then find out i can not get them back together.
God i hope my new fo is here tomorrow,i only bought this vintage model because it looked good and was a bargain but it sure is a pain :)

Help,please help,,my head hurts :)

There are cork linings inside the clutches if these become contaminated then they allow slipage of the clutch. That may be your problem. Hope that helps.

yep your right tankman and ty sir.
I stripped the tank and cleaned the gearbox and while there i took the 2 black bell housings off and i remember this cork type clutch well from back in the day and it turns out the rear lining was contaminated with white grease the last owner had pasted round the motor gear.
I have cleaned them and i know they will be still wet but i think there is still slip on one of them.Better tested when dry.
Now,can anyone tell me if any type of cork disc can be purchased from the uk,that i can mod to go in there? or,can i get some other sort of material as a replacement?
All idea's welcome.
Thanks all
Tim

Update
I just got some 1mm thick NITRILE RUBBER BONDED CORK SHEET from evilbay, but i do not know if this will work.
Idea's still welcome.
