SU-100 1/16 scale external barrel length

Post by MichaelC »

Hi all,

Just bought a SU-100 metal barrel and having some difficulty determining the correct external barrel length (barrel that is exterior pass the mantlet to the tip). If I used Bradford's armoured Fighting Vehicles line drawing I get 22cm. If I used the Wydawnictwo Tank Power SU-85/100/122 line drawing I get 24cm.......

Usually they are pretty close but 2cm seems like a huge difference to me. I have to say that the Bradford one looks like they just use the SU-85 drawing and it does look a little short to me.

Any suggestions ?

MichaelC ?

How long was the barrel you bought...if it's longer personally I wouldn't cut it...for some reasons even if the barrel isn't quite prototypical ... it looks good lol....had a similar dilemma with my L70... I'm leaving it long :D

3/4 of an inch... does make a difference ;)

Hi Michael,

From memory I made mine 22cm. To be honest that is plenty long enough, I keep crashing it into buildings. :haha:

Thanks guys........ ALPHA, I don't need to cut it, just need to find the right mount point for the recoil inside the tank. The barrel has tons of sliding room and the mount point is on the extended part of the barrel, so even if I don't like whatever length I decided on at first, I can always remount the recoil on the different point. Just curious as to why there is a difference and also what the actual scale length should be. My inclination right now is to go 24cm and see how it goes but if I am having the same problem as Tankbear then I can always change it back.

Sounds like a good Plan Micheal... on my L70 I kind of played with the barrel too... short it looked dorky :haha: ...but as tankbear pointed out...a long barrel can be a nuisance :lolno:

I've never liked the undersized mantlet that comes with the Imperial kits of the SU-85 and SU-100, so I finally broke down and bought the new Trumpeter SU-100 kit. Now, I don't know if Trumpeter got the dimensions correct or not, but their barrel measures 23 cm from the end of the mantlet to the tip of the barrel - right in between your two measurements. -Mike

Thanks Mike. In playing with the different position of the recoil servo I ended up squarely on 23cm ! It must be fate. Not only is it the ideal position for the servo and it even has some empirical support (from Trumpeter). I know what you mean about the mantlet........ I will need to come up with another reason to pick-up the SU-100 kit. Did you just use the mantlet (?!?!?) or did you end up RCing the Trumpeter kit ?

Thanks again this is great help and now I can sleep at night...... :-)

Hey Michael. I plan to use the majority of the Trumpeter kit on a working chassis; not sure which one yet. If I knew how to cast, I would re-cast just the mantlet for use on the Imperial kits; so I could bring them up to par, as well. -Mike
