Today I took a trip to walmart and picked up two cans of this
Image
At $13+shipping I was going broke buying mr surfacer 1200 red oxide primer, 2 cans had hardly dented the surface of this project. The Krylon is under $4 a can sprays much smoother and is darn close to the same colour. One can should do the whole project and some :D
Here are a few photos of where I am, used mr surfaced 500 dabbed on surface to add texture , painted the air cleaner covers and primed a few bits and pieces. It looks a mess but I am getting there.

In this photo you can see why I would prefer to work in plastic, I had a heck of a time grinding off the extra rear column light, gave up! And my mud flap bracket snapped off where both screws attach so have to figure out a fix for that >:<
Image
Still on the fence with my scratch built air cleaners, they look rough?
That's it for now. Cheers Mark

I would agree with you on your aircleaners Mark.... if your fiance has some emery boards you can "borrow" ... hit them with that first...then with the krylon primer.. spray some in the cap..let it sit ...it will thicken up and become a putty(this happens pretty fast ..so you can work fast ;) )...get some Qtips and dab the trouble spots... hit between coats with the emery board ...till you get the effect you want :D

Thanks Alpha will have a go at that .
I am trying to get them similar to these
Image
But although beat up the originals don't look as rough as mine,
Will keep at it and if I can't get the right look I have a brand new set of Tamiya early style ones to use.

Think you are pretty close Marc.... smoothing out the surface should help in the "look"...as the only think keeping it from looking like the photo is the surface texture :D

Good Luck

Well honeymoon is over, back to reality!!!
And the tank :)
Did a bit of painting to lower hull and a few wheels till I ran out of paint.
Off to Hobby shop tomorrow :)
The sprockets and front road wheels I tried the hairspray method
It worked quite well I kept the chipping to a minimum.
I can already tell some tweaking will be required to get all wheels running smoothly some rub and one rubs the rear idler. But once all the weight is added then I will tinker.
