Hobby Engine M1A2 Abrams, upgrades - HELP

Post by Avenger2040 »

Hello guys!

New guy in forums and R/C world too, and as normal from a beginner I come with some questions, but first some background about the project.

As title say I got a M1A2 Abrams from Hobby Engine, I find it a fun an very cheap (price) tank and love it, but I find it to be a bit slow in general and I'm not a fan of plastic tracks, so I was getting the idea after watching a YouTube video, to upgrade my tank in a small way, but got no idea if it will work.

First get a new set of gearbox with metal gears, was thinking to use Henglong 3869/3879/3888/3899

In said video, this guy used a Tiger I metal tracks and, but they will work? If yes, this would be good?
Mato Metal upgraded Tracks, sprockets, idler wheels parts set for Heng Long 3818-1

For turret traverse also noted it can go 360 degrees and painfully slow, this is solved with a new unit?

Also I leave link for the video that gave the idea to try this:

I know some guys will go for the "Buy a better tank" way, but here in Mexico city are a bit expensive and rare to find, a Tamiya 1/16 King Tiger is over 900dlls and you still need to buy a controller for it, sorry for the long post and thanks in advance!

Also I got another question, this time about batteries, I play airsoft and moved long ago from NIMH to LiPo batteries, so I got the idea to change the stock battery (7.2v 800mAh) to a 8.4v 1100mAh, but when I looked at both batteries something was wrong, stock one got the polarity inverted compared with the airsoft one, pics for reference:

Extra voltage will damage something?

And when looking in tank's insides the question continued, black wire is really ground? If yes I only need to invert the tamiya connector in tank to use the new battery, right?

Hello Avenger2040,

This is what I did my hobby engine abrams tank which should answer some of your questions.

viewtopic.php?f=23&t=11257&hilit=abrams

I didn't keep the original electronics so cannot comment on those parts.

The turret turn swap to a heng long unit is easy and if you find that is still slow try further swapping the motor in the heng long turn to an airsoft motor as these are better quality and faster.

I don't think Tiger tracks will fit as the Tiger has 2 guide horns and are off set the abrams needs 1 central guide horn. Plus the abrams have longer track length so you would have to buy 2 sets of the tiger and join them and have a fair few spare.

Very nice work you did there!! But still I fell it will be to much for a newbie like me, I will try to get a Heng Long turret unit to change stock one, motor in HL looks more like a Tamiya mini 4WD, lucky of me also got a lot of those motors.

For the tracks... Snow Leopard tracks would work? In theory changing tamiya connector in tank will work, since I will not mess with polarity, will try it tomorrow.

I think the snow leopard tracks will fit but you'll need the drive sprocket as well. plus again too short so need to sets to make long enough.

You should be fine with the ZTZ99 tracks or the Leopard 2a6 tracks as these are long enough to start with. I find the plastic tracks are fine (metal adds to much weight) and same with the gearboxes the plastic ones are okay with plastic tracks.

Not certain where you could buy the plastic tracks from, but if you post in the wanted section someone who has upgrade to metal tracks might sell they old plastic ones.

This adds too much weight, if you have a hobby engine abrams tank alpha you would know the suspension cannot take it.

Stick with plastic and keeps tank light and fast like it needs to be.

Good to know tank.... and no I don't have the Hobby Engine... I've read too much about them to buy one ...I prefer waiting for the new release from Heng Long....though I imagine they might copy some of the external details of the Hobby Engine... I'm sure the internals will be much better ...and will probably have the new gen 2.4 gig rigs in them... :D

Patience... I got that covered :haha:

Happy Tanking Image

ps. Wasn't sure Avenger would be able to use the sprockets anyway... just posting to help him out as he was looking for metal tracks ..and was planning on changing his gearboxes

Guys, I can get 2.4Ghz multifunction unit with HL control and a turret turning gearbox for free, with that future upgrades in tank would be easy right? what else is needed to change electronics and make the tank run?
