Just thinking about my next few builds ...and mulling round some ideas
I have a question ...will the HL king tiger wheels ...fit on the hl tiger 1 shafts
Can any one ' test fit ' before i go ordering a pile of parts

Hey Mcevoyi... I'm pretty sure they are interchangeable ....most of the wheels on Heng Longs have the same size holes in them...track compatibility will be the trick

Marc, the late Tiger I builds used the same metal rimmed road wheels as the King Tiger, but with a couple of small differences.
The HL Tiger II wheels will probably fit a standard HL Tiger I arm, but the caps on the front are different. The track might also be a problem, I'm not sure if the guide horns will fit. Someones probably already tried this out though!

I didn't know that actually. I remember seeing late war tigers with no rubber tires just bare metal. The king tigers so far as I know used that design from the get-go, rubber being yet another resource in desperately short supply in the Reich by the time KT''S hit the battlefield. So that would make perfect sense to use same wheels, a rare attempt at commonality.
Maybe this overly long comment I am about to make is too much of an answer for this particular question?! Although it may not quite fit here i always find the technical details of of the panzer forces of interest and i gobble up such info (and regurgitate it at every opportunity like another "Cliff Claven" at the least opportunity... You have permission to click away now if this it's not your cup of tea at the moment...)
Guderian commented in his memoirs at the ridiculous supply problems German panzer forces faced. Most of it caused because of the dilettante Hitler and his constant meddling in things he knew nothing about. He wanted to "help" design every new tank and gun even down to the extent of hand drawing improvements he wanted and over-riding designers decisions. And as with any dilletante, more often then not his amateurish meddling led to disastrous results. The tiger, introduced in late 1942, had the 88mm gun. This was virtually the same weapon as the wheeled Flak 88 anti aircraft gun and the ammo would even interchange! The 88 worked quite well and until wars end no allied tank had a gun to counter it.. Simply fitting the gun in every German heavy tank would have eliminated many supply problems. Along came the Panther, more mobile then the tiger and a better tank in some ways. But the Panther had a special high velocity 75 mm gun. It was considered worth adding another round to the supply system to have this gun even though the ammo for it fit nothing else in the German arsenal. The ammo did not even interchange with that in the 75mm gun in the late war panzer IV or the Stug... THEN came the King tiger, the penultimate German heavy. It had an 88 too but it was different from the tigers gun and IT'S SHELLS DID NOT INTERCHANGE WITH ANYTHING. Why not fit them all with the tiger's 88 and have ONE size of shell for all of them? Well that madness was of course, Hitler's doing-and it may not have lost the war for germany but it was certainly a factor.
By contrast the Russians stuck with their 76mm and later, the 85mm in the t-34 and that was that. The "untermenschen" that hitler scorned had a far better understanding of logistics then he.
Guderian himself clashed with Hitler constantly, understandably so as he watched Hitler throw victory away time and again. Guderian had been sacked in december 1941 by impetuous Hitler over disagreements after the failed operating Typhoon" (Guderian was a master strategist and hitler was an insane megalomaniac)where the Germans forces ground to a halt, in sight of the spires of the Kremlin. Before Kursk in early 1943 Hitler implored Guderian to return to service, this time as inspector general of all armored forces...Guderian agreed on the condition that he communicated only and directly to the Fuehrer himself (as the high command OKH/OKH tended to meddle, and even would change orders and messages from commanders in the field if they didn't like what was being said! )
Anyway...Guderian describes the logistics nightmare that repairing the panzer forces had become by then all due to the Fuehrer meddling..when i find the full quote, that's in his memoirs I'll add it later...He said something like "the plethora of new tank designs, and their constant modification, coupled with a constant and crippling lack of spare parts to fix the dozens of different tanks and all their variants, placed an insurmountable burden on the repair shops. Repair of tanks in the field became impossible. Many panzer unit commander would not return
damaged tanks to the rear for major repair as often this meant the tanks got sent back to Germany, with the resultant long delay in getting them back. Repair crews tried mightily to keep the panzers running, but with permanent
shortages of everything there was a limit on what even they could do."
Maybe the closest the waffenamt came to any sort of commonality was with the Panther. Despite being introduced late in the war it was clear the Germans had high hopes for it as they managed to produce 5,000 panthers by wars end...If the war had gone on any longer no doubt even more would have been built and indeed, it's said Guderian
even proposed stopping production of all tanks except the Panther and king tiger. At that point it was far too late for such measures to have and as always with the German forces too little too late the rule!

The Late Tiger I metal road wheels are similar but not identical to the King Tiger wheels. If you are interested in converting to the Late Tiger I metal road wheels you can get sets that are made for Tiger I specifically. Also there are 8 boggies for Tiger I and 9 for King Tiger.
