smaller stronger motors

Hi Guys,

so I need to pick peoples brains here. I ran my new L70 around at our last tank day with mixed results. One of the evident things I need is motors with more torque. I am running Asiatam gearboxes with the standard motors which I am going to guess by performance are 280's or something like that. Now when I gutted the Mk. IV I used for the bottom hul it was running 380's and had lots of power and torque so probably looking for that or 400's.
Here is the issue, the stock motors are quite short. I am guesstimating around 34-35mm from the mounting plate to the back shaft mount. Unfortunately the Waltersons 400's I have, and any other stock motor I have and look at are longer. Since I am using Asiatam the motors are side by side so I can't fit anything in that is longer. So, I know there are motorheads on here, anybody got any suggestions???

There is a trick with putting neodymium magnets on the motor cases to make it run faster (not certain about torque) but I think someone tried it on their tank a few years back but no improvement.

Another option (depending on your electronics) is to use a higher voltage battery, i.e. 8.4v, 9.6v, or 11.1v

Im suprised as those asiatam 380 motors that come with the TUs are really strong when I've used them!

Tom, are you sure those are 380's on the stock asiatam??? I have posted a pic here of what I have. Maybe because I got them used they are a little used up because they sure don't seem to run like my other 380's...

these problems are exactly the reason why I have long, these motors are no longer used and only with Brushless. Even my smallest, which are very small indeed have been more than three times the performance possible than the usual brush motors and a significantly higher torque.

Thanks Edwin, I have looked on your motors with envy. Because they are brushless they would require a different ESC correct? I am using Clark boards exclusively so I don't think I can use a brushless motor unless you say different..

myself drive without any ESC.

The regulator required I mix in the transmitter and the sound and features I do with a Beier sound module.

But there is now the ESC can work with Brushless just not Clark.

However, it is a technique that comes more and more because it simply offers advantages. I build only armor with brushless motors and also in a Famo I've built these engines.
